1) Do I order the Simplex 1000 in a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, and can I get the deeper latch throw either way?
Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore: 2-3/4 inches (70 mm) is the usual commercial prep, 2-3/8 inches (60 mm) the shorter one. Both backsets are offered on the Simplex 1000 knob lock with the 1/2 inch (13 mm) throw latch. The optional 3/4 inch (19 mm) throw latch is only paired with the 2-3/4 inch backset, so if you need the longer throw, the 2-3/8 backset is not an option. All four finishes are available on both backsets.
2) Can I put a Simplex 1000 pushbutton lock on an aluminum storefront door?
Not on a narrow stile one. The Simplex 1000 knob lock is a wide stile device and needs a minimum stile of 5 inches (127 mm) to take the lock body and the pushbutton escutcheon. Typical aluminum storefront stiles are narrower than that, so the lock will not fit the door. Where the stile does measure 5 inches or more, it installs fine. Measure the flat face of the lock stile before ordering, not the glass opening.
3) Is there any way to get in with a key if someone forgets the code on a Simplex 1000?
No. This version of the Simplex 1000 is the combination entry and passage model built without key override, so it is non-keyed and takes no cylinder or core at all. Entry is by the single pushbutton code only. That also rules out the lockout feature, which on Simplex models works by disabling the entry code and letting the key override in. If you need a key bypass or lockout on the opening, order a Simplex 1000 configured with the key override rather than this one.
4) Does the Simplex 1000 need batteries, power, or wiring run to the door?
None of the three. The Simplex 1000 is a fully mechanical pushbutton lock, so there is no battery to change, no transformer, and no wire to pull to the opening. The code is set at the keypad with the lock still hung on the door, which means no downtime and no locksmith call to change it. For a property manager rotating a code after a tenant moves out or a contractor leaves, that is the whole job done at the door.
5) Is the Simplex 1000 pushbutton lock approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. The cylindrical latch carries a 3-hour UL and ULC fire rating for A labeled doors, which covers the stairwell and corridor openings where an A label is typically required. The lock also meets D.O.D. 5220.22M for supplemental access control, which matters if you are specifying for a government or defense facility.
6) Can I give each tenant or employee their own code on a Simplex 1000?
No. The Simplex 1000 runs a single access code shared by everyone who uses the door. That is the trade for a lock with no power, no batteries, and no programming software, and it works well on a shared entry, a mechanical room, or a storage door where one code covers the whole group. If you need individual user codes or per-person access, a single-code mechanical lock is the wrong tool for that opening.
7) Do I have to specify left or right hand when ordering a Simplex 1000 knob lock?
No handing to call out on the order. The Simplex 1000 is sold non-handed. It arrives factory set for a left-hand door and reverses in the field, so one part covers either swing and you can stock a single lock for a building with doors going both ways.
8) How do people get out from the inside if they do not know the Simplex 1000 code?
Free egress is always available. The code controls entry from the outside only; turning the inside knob retracts the latch and lets anyone out, no code needed. There is also a passage mode on this model, switched on from the inside, that holds the lock unlocked so people can walk in from the outside without entering the code. That is what you use for a door that needs to stay open through business hours and lock again at close.
9) Will a Simplex 1000 hold up on a high traffic door or one people abuse?
It is built for commercial duty and rated Grade 1, the highest of the ANSI/BHMA durability grades.
