Dormakaba EE1011/EE101126D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Simplex EE1000 pushbutton lock fit a 2-inch thick door?
The EE1000 Series covers 1-3/4 inch through 2-1/4 inch doors, but anything over 2 inches needs the modified lock, and that has to be called out when the order is placed. Standard build handles 1-3/4 to 2 inches. Also check your stile: the lock needs at least 5 inches of stile width to land the keypad housings, which rules out most narrow stile aluminum doors.
2) Does the Simplex EE1000 need a key or a card to get out from the inside?
No. The EE1000 is the back-to-back version of the Simplex line: pushbutton entry on the outside and pushbutton egress on the inside, so a code gets you through the door in either direction. That is what separates it from the single-sided Simplex locks, which free-turn on the inside. It is a non-keyed lock as built, with one shared access code that gets reprogrammed through the keypad without pulling the lock off the door.
3) Will this Simplex lock latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
Depends which latch you order. The 1011 build uses a 1/2 inch throw latch with a floating face plate; the 1015 build uses a 3/4 inch throw with a beveled face plate. Both run a 2-3/4 inch backset and the door is prepped ASA 161 with extra through-bore holes for the back-to-back trim. If your existing frame has an ASA strike, that is supported, as is a standard strike plate. A deeper 3/4 inch throw is the one to pick on a frame with a gap or a slightly sprung door.
4) Can I use a Dormakaba Simplex EE1000 on a fire-rated door?
Yes. The cylindrical latch carries a 3-hour UL/ULC fire rating on "A" labeled doors, and the lock is Grade 1 commercial. For a facility standardizing on fire-rated openings, this is the mechanical option that keeps the code on the door without adding batteries or a power supply to the fire assembly.
5) Will a Simplex EE1000 fit a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
No. The lock needs a minimum 5 inch stile, and typical narrow stile aluminum entrance doors are around 2 to 3-1/2 inches, so there is not enough face to take the back-to-back keypad housings. It is also a cylindrical bored lockset on a 2-3/4 inch backset with ASA 161 prep, which is a hollow metal or wood door prep, not a storefront prep. For a glass front opening you want a narrow stile device instead.
6) Can I retrofit a Simplex EE1000 onto a door that currently has a standard cylindrical lockset?
Usually, with drilling. It is a bored cylindrical lock on the ASA 161 prep that most commercial cylindrical locksets already use, so the cross bore and 2-3/4 inch backset line up with a door prepped for a 2-3/4 backset knob lock. The catch is the back-to-back build needs additional through-bore holes for the mounting between the two keypad housings, so it is not a straight drop-in. If the existing lock is on a 2-3/8 inch backset, the cross bore is in the wrong place.
7) Is the Simplex EE1000 handed, or do I have to order left and right hand separately?
One part number covers both hands. The lock ships factory-handed for left-hand doors and is reversed in the field during installation, so a property manager buying for a mix of openings orders the same lock every time and sets the hand at the door.
8) Should I use a mechanical pushbutton lock or an electronic keypad lock on an exterior door?
A mechanical Simplex like the EE1000 has no batteries and no power to run, so it keeps working through a dead battery, a power outage, or a cold snap that flattens cells. The tradeoff is one shared code rather than individual user codes and no audit trail. If your requirement is per-user credentials or logging, this is the wrong lock. If the requirement is keyless access on a remote door, a mechanical room, or a gate house that nobody wants to service twice a year, the mechanical version is the one that stays working.
9) Is the Simplex EE1000 keypad tough enough for a high traffic door?
It is built for it. Solid metal pushbuttons rather than rubber or membrane, cast front and back housings, cast knobs, and Grade 1 commercial rating, which is the heaviest duty ANSI/BHMA cylindrical grade. That combination is what holds up on a tenant entry, a shared laundry, or a contractor door that sees hundreds of cycles a day.
10) How do I change the code on a Simplex EE1000 when a tenant moves out?
The combination is reset through the keypad itself, with the lock still mounted on the door. No software, no programmer, no removing trim. One code covers everyone who uses that opening, so turnover means changing the single code rather than collecting keys or reissuing cards.
