Dortronics 4300 Series 2-Door Interlock Controller Economical Interlock & Mantrap Solution

The 4300 series door interlock controller provides an economical solution for simple interlocks. This unit is configured to allow only one door, in a 2-door vestibule, to be unsecured at a time. The second door is secured and inhibited from opening while the first door is accessed to maintain the highest level of control.

  • Environmental or Security Control: Suitable for air locks or security mantraps, this controller can be field configured as both doors normally unlocked or normally locked or one door locked and one unlocked. There is a built-in emergency release function that can unlock one or both doors regardless of door status.
  • Access Control Compatible: Any access control system can be used with the 4300 series controllers. The request for access input recognizes any normally open dry contact. The door unlock sequence will follow the status of the request for access input.
  • Integral 12/24 VDC Power Supply: The 4300 is paired with a 4204NX 4 amp UL listed class 2 power supply which also provides 12 or 24 VDC to operate maglocks and/or strikes for each of the doors. The heavy-duty power supply is ready for hook-up to the fire alarm system. An alarm output is also provided for monitoring the power system.

1) How does a 2-door mantrap interlock controller keep both doors from being open at once?
The Dortronics 4300 Series interlock controller allows only one door in a 2-door vestibule to be unsecured at a time. While the first door is being accessed, the second door stays secured and is inhibited from opening. The controller watches two dry contact door status inputs (contact closed when the door is secure) and two request-to-access inputs, and the unlock sequence follows the status of the request-for-access input.
2) Should I order the normally locked or normally unlocked version of the Dortronics 43211 interlock?
Three build options exist. The 43211-L is 2-door / 1-room with both doors normally locked, which is what you want for a security mantrap where nobody passes without a valid access request. The 43211-U is 2-door / 1-room with both doors normally unlocked, the usual choice for an air lock or environmental vestibule where free passage is fine as long as both leaves are never open together. The 43211-L/U mixes them, one normally locked door and one normally unlocked. The unit is field configurable between these modes, so the function you pick is how it ships set up rather than a permanent limit.
3) Will the Dortronics 4300 interlock work with my existing card access system?
Any access control system can drive the 4300 series controller. The request for access input recognizes any normally open dry contact, so a relay output from your card reader panel, keypad, or REX device wires straight in. There is no proprietary protocol to match, just a dry contact closure per door.
4) Do I need a separate power supply to run maglocks with the Dortronics 4300 interlock?
No separate supply is needed for typical door hardware. The 4300 is paired with a 4204NX 4 amp UL listed class 2 power supply that also provides 12 or 24 VDC to operate maglocks and/or strikes on both doors. Input is fused 110 VAC, output is 4 amps at 12 or 24 VDC, selectable. Budget your two locks against that 4 amp total.
5) Can a Dortronics mantrap controller be tied into the building fire alarm?
The heavy-duty power supply on the 4300 is ready for hook-up to the fire alarm system, which is how you drop the locks on alarm as the AHJ will require for a mantrap on an egress path. A separate alarm output is also provided for monitoring the power system itself.
6) How does someone get out of the vestibule in an emergency with a door interlock controller?
There is a built-in emergency release function that unlocks one or both doors regardless of door status, so the interlock logic is overridden rather than negotiated. Two dry contact normally open panic release inputs are provided, one per door, for a mushroom button or panic station.
7) Will the Dortronics 4300 relay outputs switch my maglock directly, or do I need an interposing relay?
Each door gets two relay outputs. The LOCK 1 and 2 outputs are SPDT, powered and fused, rated 1.6 amps at 30 VDC, so a maglock or strike drawing under that wires directly with no interposing relay. The RLY 1 and 2 outputs are SPDT unpowered and unfused at the same 1.6 amps at 30 VDC, for dry switching to another panel or device. Anything above 1.6 amps needs an interposing relay.
8) What size wall space do I need for a Dortronics 43211 interlock enclosure?
The NEMA 1 enclosure measures 12 inches W x 15.5 inches L x 4.5 inches deep and holds one I/O module together with the power supply. The 4300 module itself is 5 x 3 inches overall. NEMA 1 is an indoor, dry location rating, so plan on an electrical or IT room rather than an exterior wall.
9) Can I use the Dortronics 4300 controller for a 3-door or 4-door interlock?
Not as supplied. The 43211 is a 2-door, 1-room configuration, and the enclosure that comes with it accommodates exactly one I/O module along with the power supply. Additional modules require larger enclosures, so a vestibule with more than two leaves is a different build, not an add-on to this one.
10) Is a door interlock controller the same thing as a mantrap controller, and which do I need?
Same hardware, different job. The 4300 series is used both ways: as an environmental air lock, where the point is keeping conditioned or clean air from crossing two open doors, and as a security mantrap, where the point is that nobody passes both leaves at once. For an air lock you typically run the doors normally unlocked and let the interlock only inhibit the second leaf. For a security mantrap you run them normally locked and let the access control system release each side in turn.
11) What door status wiring does a Dortronics interlock need at each opening?
Each door needs a dry contact that closes when the door is secure, typically a door position switch or the bond sensor on a maglock, landing on the two door status inputs. Each door also needs a normally open dry contact for request to access and, if you are fitting one, a normally open panic release contact. Maglock or strike LED indicators on the board show the state of each door while you are commissioning.
