DynaLock 2585 Series 650 Lb. “Bantam”

Model 2585/2585-TJ85

2585 Bantam Single Outswinging Door
Single coil. Mounts to the underside of the frame header.
12 or 24 VDC field selectable. Ultra-compact 81 /2” long.

2585TJ85 Bantam Single Inswinging Door
Single coil. Mounts to the face of the frame header.
12 or 24 VDC field selectable. Ultra-compact 81 /2” long.

Each 2500 Series Electromagnetic Lock is comprised of 3 basic components: a lock housing, an electromagnetic coil, and an armature. The coil and housing assembly mounts rigidly to the door frame while the armature mounts to the door in a manner that allows it to pivot slightly to compensate for door irregularities. When the door is closed and the lock is energized the armature is magnetically bonded to the lock face, thus securing the door without utilizing any moving parts. Single and double door models are available as well as the 2585 Series, which has a shorter housing. At only 81 /2” long, the 2585 “Bantam” lock is perfect for installations where space is limited. All locks are designed for ease of use, and built in the USA to last a lifetime.

Standard Features

• Holding Force - 650 lbs. holding force provides for effective traffic control. Examples include interior office doors, clean room interlocks, tool cribs, and x-ray areas
• 4 Operating Voltages - All models (except the 2585) offer 12 or 24 VDC or VAC for installation flexibility and to reduce stock.
• Low Power Consumption conserves energy, reduces operating cost, and extends battery backup time
• A Totally Plated Coil and armature provides protection against corrosion.
• No Residual Magnetism - The lock releases without delay when de-energized.
• Narrow Backset - A thin lock section (11 /4”) may mean the elimination of additional mounting brackets

DynaLock 2585-TJ85 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the DynaLock 2585-TJ85 for an inswing or outswing door?
Inswing. The 2585-TJ85 mounts to the face of the frame header, which is what suits it to a single inswinging door. If your door swings out, you want the plain 2585 instead, which mounts to the underside of the frame header. Both are single-coil, single-door locks.
2) Will a 650 lb mag lock hold a main entrance or exterior door?
650 lbs of holding force is traffic-control level, not perimeter security. DynaLock positions the Bantam for interior office doors, clean room interlocks, tool cribs, and x-ray areas. For an entrance or a door someone may pull hard on, step up to a higher force unit such as the Dorma EML310 single-door lock at 1500 lb, or the Locknetics MG Series which is offered in 600 lb and 1200 lb models.
3) Can I run the DynaLock 2585-TJ85 on 12 or 24 volts, and what is the current draw?
Voltage is field selectable between 12 and 24 VDC, so one unit covers either supply. Draw is 500 mA at 12 VDC and 250 mA at 24 VDC. Running it at 24 V halves the current, which helps on long wire runs and stretches battery backup time.
4) Does this mag lock unlock on a fire alarm or power failure?
An electromagnetic lock like the 2585-TJ85 holds only while energized and releases immediately when power drops, with no residual magnetism to delay it. Cut power from the fire alarm relay or the access control panel and the door is free. That is fail safe operation, the same function listed on comparable units like the Dorma EML310, and it is why mag locks require egress devices (request-to-exit, push button, or motion sensor) to meet code on the egress side.
5) What is the closest alternative to the DynaLock 2585-TJ85 mag lock for a single interior door if a compact 650 lb unit is not the right fit?
The DynaLock 2585-TJ85 is a surface mounted single-door electromagnetic lock rated at 650 lbs. holding force on 12/24 VDC field selectable power. For a similar single-door application with lower holding force, the Schlage M420 is a single-door electromagnetic lock rated at 500 lbs. holding force. If a slim housing is the priority, the Dortronics 1107 is a narrow 2 inch slim line single-door mag lock rated at 600 lbs. The Locknetics MG Series covers 600 lb and 1200 lb models on 12/24VDC, so it spans both a comparable and a higher holding force in one series.
6) Which magnetic lock should I use instead of the DynaLock 2585-TJ85 on a pair of doors?
The 2585-TJ85 is built for a single inswinging door, mounting to the face of the frame header. For a pair of doors, the Alarm Controls 1200D Series is a double magnetic lock, and the Dorma EML320 is a double-door electromagnetic lock rated at 1500 lb. that is fire rated and electrically locked (fail safe).
7) I need a fire rated magnetic lock - can I use the DynaLock 2585-TJ85?
If the specification calls for a fire rating on the mag lock itself, the Dorma EML310 single-door units are fire rated and electrically locked (fail safe) at 1500 lb. holding force, available with a door position sensor, or with both bond alert and door position sensor. The DynaLock 2585-TJ85 is the compact 650 lb. single inswing Bantam and is selected primarily where header space is limited, at 1-1/4 inch D x 1-3/4 inch H x 8-1/2 inch L.
8) If the opening needs delayed egress, what takes the place of the DynaLock 2585-TJ85?
The 2585-TJ85 releases without delay when de-energized, as it has no residual magnetism. Where the code requirement or security plan calls for a timed hold before release on a single door, the Alarm Controls 1200DE Series is a delayed egress magnetic lock for single doors.
9) What options do I have to specify when ordering the DynaLock 2585-TJ85?
Three yes/no options, in all eight combinations: a door status switch for monitoring whether the door is closed, the Dynastat force sensor for verifying magnetic bond, and the pre-wired rectifier bridge for AC input. If your access control panel wants monitoring inputs, add the switch and the Dynastat at the time of order.
10) Is the DynaLock 2585 Bantam suitable for a double door?
No. The Bantam is a single-coil, single-door lock. For a pair of doors, look at a double-door unit such as the Alarm Controls 1200D Series or the Dorma EML320, which is a double-door 1500 lb lock.
11) Can this mag lock be used outdoors or in a wash-down area?
The coil and armature are fully plated for corrosion protection, but the 2585-TJ85 is a surface-mounted indoor commercial lock and DynaLock's stated applications are all interior. For exterior gates or wet locations, choose a weather-rated unit such as the Alarm Controls 1200WP Series, the Locknetics WMG Series, or the Dortronics 1000 Series with sealed electronics.
12) Does the mag lock need any door prep or mortising?
No cutting into the door or frame. It is surface mounted: the housing and coil fasten to the frame header and the armature fastens to the door face, where it pivots slightly to take up door irregularities. There are no moving parts in the lock itself. If the job calls for a concealed installation instead, that is a mortise or shear lock, for example the Schlage 320M compact mortise lock or the ROFU 8031-002 shear lock.
13) What is a slimmer or lower force alternative if the DynaLock Bantam does not fit my frame?
Two directions. For a narrow slim-line profile on a single door, the Dortronics 1107 is a 2 inch narrow 600 lb single-door mag lock. For lighter holding on a single door, the Schlage M420 is rated 500 lbs. Both cover the same interior traffic-control role as the 650 lb Bantam.
14) What looks like a substitute for the DynaLock 2585-TJ85 Bantam but will not mount the same way?
Shear locks and mortise locks are not drop-in alternatives to the 2585-TJ85, which surface mounts to the face of the frame header on a single inswinging door. The ROFU 8031-002 is a shear lock with 2200 lb. holding force on 12/24VDC, monitored, and the Schlage 320M is a compact mortise sliding door electromagnetic lock at 1500 lbs. holding force - both require different door and frame preparation. The ROFU 8512 is a single magnet unit using selectable keyhole mounting at 1200 lb. holding force, which is again a different mounting approach.
15) Will this mag lock damage my access control board when it releases?
Built-in spike suppression handles the inductive kick, protecting other solid state components in the system when the lock is de-energized. No external diode across the coil is needed.
