B-LINE 4D22S-240YZN – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the 4D22 channel solid or slotted on the back?
The hole pattern on the 4D22S is S, the slotted pattern. That means you can bolt back to structure anywhere along the run without field drilling, which is what most electrical and mechanical hanger work calls for. If you want an unpunched back for a continuous weld or a cleaner look, you need the solid version of the 4D22 channel instead.
2) Can B-Line 4Dimension 4D22 strut be used outdoors or in a damp area?
The finish here is yellow zinc chromate on steel, which is a coating for dry, protected interior work. It is not the finish to run outdoors, in a parking structure, on a roof, or in a wash-down or corrosive area. For those, specify hot dip galvanized or stainless channel.
3) What gauge steel is the B-Line 4D22S strut channel?
18 gauge steel. That is the lighter end of the strut range, suited to conduit runs, small pipe, light fixture supports and cable tray hangers rather than heavy mechanical loads. If you are hanging heavy equipment or spanning long unsupported distances, step up to a heavier gauge channel in the same profile.
4) Why use a four sided 4Dimension channel instead of ordinary open strut?
A four sided closed profile like the 4D22 gives you slots on all faces, so you can attach in any direction from one piece and build trapezes, racks and freestanding frames without adding back-to-back welded sections. Conventional single channel only accepts hardware on the open face, which means more pieces and more fabrication on a multi-directional support. The trade-off is that the 4D22 takes its own fitting family rather than plain single-channel nuts.
5) Does the B-Line 4D22S strut channel come with nuts, bolts or end caps?
It ships as bare channel only, a single 240 inch length of 18 gauge steel in yellow zinc chromate. Spring nuts, bolts, end caps, post bases, conduit clamps and any bracket or fitting are separate line items, so add them to the order when you spec the strut.
6) Can 4D22S strut channel be cut to shorter lengths on site?
Yes. It is 18 gauge steel and cuts with a bandsaw, chop saw with a metal blade or a portable band saw. Because the slots run the length of the piece, a cut section keeps its attachment pattern. Touch up cut ends with a zinc rich cold galvanizing paint, since the yellow zinc chromate coating stops at the cut.
