The 4436-12FW is a NEMA 4X wireway, so it is built for wet, outdoor and corrosive-duty locations, not just dry indoor runs. The 4X rating comes from a seamless poured-in-place gasket rather than a glued-in strip, and the hinged cover clamps down with screw clamps to keep that seal compressed. If your run is a dry indoor electrical room, a NEMA 1 screw-cover wireway is the cheaper answer; if it is a car wash, food plant, parking deck or exterior wall, this is the type you want.

It is a 4 x 4 inch cross section running 36 inches long, so you get a nominal 4-inch square trough in a 3-foot stick. Figure your run in 3-foot increments plus fittings, and remember the 4 x 4 interior is what governs your conductor fill.

This is a 12FW-series wireway, so it is built to join with the rest of the 12FW 4 x 4 hinged-cover family, connectors, elbows, tees and end pieces in the same 4 x 4 size. Mixing in a different series or a different trough size means the flange and gasket geometry will not line up and you lose the NEMA 4X seal at the joint.

The cover is hinged, not a lift-off screw cover, so it swings open on heavy-duty hinges and is held shut with screw clamps. That means you can pull and dress conductors without juggling a loose lid, but you do need swing clearance on the hinge side. On a run tight against a wall or another raceway, plan the orientation before you set the hangers.

14 gauge steel, finished in ANSI 61 gray. That is the standard switchgear gray, so a run of this will match panelboards, enclosures and control cabinets already in ANSI 61 without a field repaint.
