B-LINE 4472 HS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use this B-Line wireway outdoors or in a washdown area?
No. The 4472 HS is a NEMA 1 enclosure, which is indoor general purpose only. It gives you protection against incidental contact and falling dirt, not water, dust, oil, or corrosive vapors. For a wet or outdoor run you need a NEMA 3R or NEMA 4 raintight wireway instead.
2) Do I need anything else besides the trough to finish a wireway run?
The section ships as a 72 inch hinged trough only. A complete run also needs connectors between sections, end caps or closing plates at each termination, elbows or tees where the run turns, and mounting hardware, since the trough attaches through holes in the back. Match any fittings to the same 4x4 trough size and NEMA 1 rating.
3) How many knockouts are on this 4 inch wireway and where are they?
There are 23 knockouts along the top and 23 along the bottom of the 72 inch section, so you can drop conduit into the trough at regular intervals down its whole length without drilling. Sides are left clear.
4) Will this wireway pass a Canadian inspection?
The 4472 HS is built to CSA C22.2, the Canadian standard series for electrical enclosures, so it is acceptable for use in Canada as well as the US.
5) Is a 4x4 wireway big enough, or should I step up to 6x6?
A 4 inch by 4 inch trough is the common choice for feeder taps, control wiring, and gutter work at panelboards where conductor count is moderate. NEC limits conductor fill in a wireway to 20 percent of the interior cross section, so once your bundle gets past that on a 4x4 you move up to 6x6 or 8x8. Count your conductors against the 20 percent rule before you commit to the smaller trough.
