1) Can this stainless wiring trough be used outdoors or in a washdown area?
It is built as a NEMA 4X enclosure in 304 stainless steel with a seamless poured in-place gasket, which is the construction used where hose-down, wet, and corrosive conditions are present. The 4X rating is why the gasket is poured rather than cut, and the hardware is stainless so the closure does not rust open. It also carries CSA C22.2 certification.
2) Does the trough mount flush to the wall or stand off it?
Welded external mounting feet hold it off the mounting surface, which is standard for a 4X stainless install: the standoff lets water and washdown drain behind the body instead of sitting in a crevice, and you fasten through the feet rather than drilling the enclosure and breaking the 4X integrity. Never drill new holes in the back of a 4X body.
3) Does the 6624-4XSWT come with conduit knockouts?
No knockouts. Like other 4X troughs it ships with an unpunched body so the rating is intact, and you punch only what you need and seal each entry with a 4X rated hub or fitting. Standard clearance holes or ordinary locknut connectors will not hold the 4X rating in a washdown area.
4) How does the cover open on the 6624-4XSWT trough, and can I get to the wires with one hand?
The cover is hinged, held by semi-hinges and secured with screw clamps using stainless steel hardware. Loosen the clamps and the cover swings out of the way instead of coming off entirely, so it will not drop into the pull while you are working. Plan clearance above the trough for the cover to rotate.
5) Is 14 gauge heavy enough for a trough carrying a full wire fill?
The body is 14 gauge 304 stainless, which is a heavier wall than the 16 gauge commonly used on painted indoor troughs. On a 6 x 6 cross section that means the sides stay true when the trough is loaded and the cover clamps still pull up tight after repeated openings. Finish is #4 brushed, so it suits food plants and clean areas where painted steel is not accepted.
6) Should I use a stainless 4X trough or a painted steel NEMA 1 trough?
Pick by environment, not by size. A NEMA 1 painted trough is an indoor dry-location part, fine in a mechanical room or electrical closet. The 6624-4XSWT is 304 stainless with a poured gasket and a 4X rating, which is what you need outdoors, in wet or washdown rooms, food and beverage processing, or where corrosives are present. If the run is dry and indoors, the 4X stainless is more enclosure than the job asks for.
