1) Can this wiring trough be used outdoors or in a washdown area?
Yes. The 6648-4XSWT is built to NEMA 4X, which covers outdoor wet locations, hosedown and washdown duty, and corrosive environments. The body is 304 stainless with a seamless poured in-place gasket, so the seal is continuous rather than a cut-and-butt strip. That combination is why it shows up in food plants, dairies, car washes and coastal exterior runs rather than a painted steel trough.
2) How does the cover open, and do I need tools to get into it?
The cover is hinged, held by semi-hinges and screw clamps with stainless hardware, so it swings back and stays captive instead of dropping off the run when you open it. You'll need a driver for the clamps, but you're not fishing loose screws or a loose cover out of a wet trough. On overhead runs that hinge is the difference between a one-man pull and a two-man pull.
3) Does the 6648-4XSWT come with mounting feet, or do I have to buy a bracket kit?
Mounting feet are welded on as part of the trough, external to the wireway body. Nothing to order separately and nothing to drill through the enclosure wall, which matters on a 4X job because every added penetration is a leak path. You supply the anchors or bolts suited to your wall or strut.
4) What gauge material is this wireway, and is it stiff enough to span between supports?
Body material is 14 gauge 304 stainless. That's a heavier wall than the 16 gauge common on light-duty indoor wireway, so a 48 inch section holds its shape between end supports and the cover flange doesn't deflect enough to break the gasket seal when you clamp it. Support spacing still follows the NEC requirement for the wireway type in your installation.
5) Is this B-Line trough acceptable for a Canadian installation?
The 6648-4XSWT carries CSA C22.2 certification, so it is listed to the Canadian standard for the product and will satisfy an inspector looking for a CSA mark on the wireway.
6) Will the brushed stainless finish match the rest of my stainless enclosures in a food processing line?
The finish is #4 brushed stainless, the standard directional satin finish used across stainless control enclosures and food-plant equipment, so a run of these troughs will read consistently alongside 304 panel enclosures and stainless conduit bodies already on the line. It also cleans up well after washdown, which is why #4 is the finish specified in sanitary areas rather than a mirror polish.
