B-LINE 8872 GRT – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Eaton B-Line 8872 GRT wiring trough be used outdoors?
The 8872 GRT trough is a NEMA 3R enclosure, so it is rated for outdoor use against falling rain and sleet. It is not a washdown or hosedown enclosure, and it is not sealed against dust or wind-driven water. For exterior walls, pump panels, or service equipment runs exposed to weather, 3R is the normal rating. If the location gets direct spray or is subject to submersion, you need a 4 or 4X box instead.
2) What are the inside dimensions of the 8872 GRT trough, and how much wire can I run in it?
The 8872 GRT is an 8 x 8 inch cross section, 72 inches long. That is a standard 8 x 8 gutter size, which is what most designers spec when they need generous conductor fill and bending space for large feeders landing at a panel or disconnect.
3) Does the B-Line 8872 GRT trough come with knockouts, or do I have to punch my own?
There are 23 knockouts in the bottom of the 8872 GRT as shipped. The sides and ends are blank, so any side or end penetrations get field punched with a knockout set or hole saw. If your raceway enters from the side rather than the bottom, plan on field work.
4) How does the cover come off on this wiring trough, and can I get back into it after install?
The 8872 GRT uses a screw cover. The cover is held by a flange and plated screws, so it lifts straight off once the screws are out. It reopens as often as you need for pulls or additions, but on a 72 inch run you are backing out a full row of screws each time. If you expect frequent access, a hinged cover trough is the easier choice.
5) What gauge steel is the 8872 GRT trough, and what color does it come in?
16 gauge steel with an ANSI 61 gray finish, which is the standard gray on most commercial panelboards and switchgear, so it matches adjacent gear in an electrical room. Closure screws are plated.
