The hubs are female threaded, so they thread directly onto rigid or IMC conduit of the matching trade size.
2) Can I use this Crouse-Hinds LB body in a hazardous or classified area?
No. The Form 5 malleable iron LB is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. For a Class I or Class II classified area you need a hazardous-location body such as a Crouse-Hinds GUA or Form 7 explosionproof unilet, not this one.
3) I am replacing an existing LB on a conduit run. Will this thread onto what is already there?
If the existing run is threaded rigid metal conduit or IMC, yes, as long as you order the matching trade size: the hubs are female threaded for that size. Threaded bodies will not accept EMT directly, so an EMT run needs threaded adapters or a set-screw/compression style body instead. Match the trade size off the existing conduit, not off the old body's catalogue number, if the number is unreadable.
4) When do I use an LB conduit body instead of an LL, LR or T body?
An LB turns the run 90 degrees with the opening on the back, which is what you want where conduit comes down a wall and has to pass through it, the classic service entrance into a building. LL and LR turn left or right with the cover on the side, and a T body gives you a third opening for a branch or a pull point. All of them are used as pull and routing points rather than junction boxes. The LB shape keeps the wire bending radius correct while leaving the cover accessible for later pulls.
5) What do the built-in rollers on this conduit body actually do?
The rollers sit inside the body at the bend so conductors ride over them during the pull instead of dragging on the casting. On larger trade sizes and long runs that cuts pulling tension and keeps insulation from being scraped as the wire turns the corner. Useful on 2 inch through 4 inch where you are pulling heavy feeders by hand or with a tugger.
6) Does the Crouse-Hinds LB outlet body come with a cover and gasket?
Covers and gaskets for Condulet Form 5 bodies are ordered separately by form and trade size. Specify a Form 5 cover matched to the same trade size as the body, plus a gasket if the location is wet or damp. The body itself is the threaded malleable iron casting.
7) Is malleable iron the right choice for an outdoor LB, or should I use aluminum?
Malleable iron is the heavier-duty option and is the usual match for rigid steel conduit runs, industrial plants and anywhere the body may take a knock. Copper-free aluminum bodies are the common pick where you are running EMT/aluminum systems or want lighter weight and no galvanic pairing with aluminum conduit. For a coastal or chemical environment, a PVC-coated body is the step up from either.
8) What is the difference between Form 5 and Form 7 Condulet bodies?
Form designation is the generation of the Condulet casting and it drives which cover fits. Form 5 is the standard ordinary-location threaded body, and its covers and gaskets are not interchangeable with Form 7 or Form 8 parts.
