Eaton CHP12L125X0 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will Eaton CH main lug loadcenters accept Square D or Siemens breakers?
No. The Type CH loadcenter takes Eaton CH circuit breakers. The bus is built for the CH breaker mounting, so Square D QO/Homeline, Siemens, or Eaton's own BR-style breakers are not the right fit. If you already own a panel full of BR breakers, order a BR loadcenter instead so the breakers carry over.
2) Is there an Eaton CH main lug panel rated for outdoor mounting?
Yes, both indoor and outdoor enclosures are offered on the CH main lug loadcenter, and the outdoor boxes are the ones whose box size code ends in R (X0R, X1R, X2R, X5R, X6R). Indoor codes drop the R (X0, X1, X2, X5, X6). If the panel is going on an exterior wall or in an unheated detached garage, take an R box; the indoor box has no rain-tight provision.
3) Does a main lug loadcenter need a separate main breaker, or is it a main breaker panel?
Main lug means no main breaker in the panel. The feeder lands directly on the lugs and overcurrent protection has to come from upstream, typically the main breaker in the service equipment or a feeder breaker in the panel ahead of it. That makes the CH main lug the right choice for a subpanel: a detached garage feed, a shop, a tenant panel fed from house main. If this is the service disconnect at the meter, you want a main breaker loadcenter instead.
4) How many circuits do I actually get in a 24 space Eaton CH loadcenter?
Spaces and poles are two different counts on the CH main lug, and the poles number is the one that matters for circuit planning. A 24 space box is rated 48 poles, because CH breakers are available in tandem form that puts two circuits in one space. The full range runs 12 spaces/24 poles, 16/32, 20/40, 24/48, 32/64, and 42/84. A 42 space panel at 84 poles is the largest.
5) Is 25 kAIC enough interrupt rating for my panel location?
The CH main lug loadcenter carries a 25 kAIC interrupt rating, which covers most residential and light commercial services. Where it matters is a panel close to a large utility transformer or a big commercial service, because available fault current there can exceed 25 kA. If your engineer's fault current study puts the panel above 25 kA, this loadcenter is not the right piece of equipment for that spot. Under it, you're fine.
6) Can an Eaton CH main lug loadcenter be used on a 208Y/120 three-phase system?
No. The CH main lug loadcenter here is single-phase, rated 120/240V. It will not serve a three-phase panel, and it should not be fed from two legs of a 208V wye either, since that supplies 208V between phases rather than the 240V this panel is rated for. For three-phase distribution you need a three-phase panelboard.
7) Which amperage Eaton CH main lug panel do I need for a subpanel feed?
Size the panel to the feeder breaker protecting it, not to the load. Four ratings are offered: 125A, 150A, 200A, and 225A. A 100A feed to a detached garage sits comfortably in a 125A panel. A 200A feeder needs a 200A or 225A panel. Going larger on the panel than the feeder is allowed and is common practice when you want room to grow, but the panel rating can never be below the breaker feeding it.
8) Copper bus or aluminum bus in an Eaton CH loadcenter?
Copper, across the CH main lug range. That matters to spec-driven buyers and to anyone standardizing a portfolio, since a lot of competing residential loadcenters ship with plated aluminum bus and copper bus is often what an engineer's spec calls out by name. The enclosure itself is steel.
9) Is the Eaton CH loadcenter UL listed for a permitted job?
UL 67 is the listing it carries, which is the standard covering panelboards. That's the listing an inspector looks for on a loadcenter installation.
10) What is the biggest Eaton CH main lug loadcenter available, and what amperage does it come in?
42 spaces / 84 poles is the top of the CH main lug range, offered at 225A in both indoor (box X6) and outdoor (box X6R) enclosures. Its lugs take #4 through 300 kcmil. That's the panel to reach for on a large house rewire or a light commercial tenant fit-out where the circuit count is what's driving the panel size.
11) I'm standardizing panels across an apartment portfolio. Can I keep one breaker stock for all of these?
Yes, and that's the practical reason to pick one family. Every configuration of the CH main lug loadcenter, from the 12 space 125A up to the 42 space 225A, indoor or outdoor, uses the same Eaton CH breakers. One breaker stock on the truck covers every panel in the portfolio, and a maintenance tech pulling a 20A single pole doesn't need to know which building they're in.
