1) Does the Emtek 14A1 include the multipoint lock mechanism, or is it just the trim?
Trim only. The 14A1 kit is the interior and exterior plates, the levers, and the American cylinder for keyed entry. The multipoint gearbox, rods and strikes stay in the door. So this is what you order when the lock itself still works and you want new hardware on the face of the door, or when a door manufacturer shipped the door prepped for a multipoint but without finish trim. If the gearbox is the failed part, this kit won't fix it.
2) Which patio door brands does the Emtek 14A1 Door Config #4 trim fit?
The 14A1 is cut for multipoint systems from Ashland, Caradco, G-U, JELD-WEN (including the Custom Collection, formerly Pozzi), Marvin, PGT, Premium Collection (formerly Norco) and Weathershield. Those are the door systems whose hardware geometry matches Door Configuration #4. Brand alone doesn't settle it though, since most of these makers used more than one multipoint layout over the years. Confirm the cylinder sits above the handle and the cylinder-to-handle centers measure 3-5/8 inches on the door you're working on.
3) How do I tell if my door is Emtek Door Configuration #4 before I order?
Two measurements decide it. On a Config #4 door the key cylinder sits above the lever, and the distance from the center of the cylinder to the center of the handle spindle is 3-5/8 inches. The two plate mounting holes are 7-1/4 inches apart center to center, and the handle sits 1-3/16 inches from its mounting point. Pull the existing interior plate off, measure cylinder-to-spindle and the screw hole span, and compare. If your cylinder is below the handle, or the centers come up at anything other than 3-5/8 inches, the 14A1 is the wrong configuration and you need the Emtek trim for whichever configuration your door actually uses.
4) What door thickness does the Emtek 14A1 multipoint trim fit?
Thickness is an order-time selection, not a one-size part. The 14A1 covers 1-5/8, 1-3/4, 1-7/8, 2, 2-1/8, 2-1/4, 2-3/8, 2-1/2, 2-5/8 and 2-3/4 inch doors, which spans standard 1-3/4 inch swinging patio doors all the way up to heavy custom and thermally broken units. The spindle and cylinder tailpiece length follow that choice, so measure the door slab at the lock edge and give the actual thickness with the order. A trim set built for a 1-3/4 inch door will not reach through a 2-1/4 inch slab.
5) Can I get the Emtek 14A1 keyed to match the Schlage keys I already carry?
Yes, on the keyway side. The 14A1 ships with a Schlage keyway cylinder as standard, and a Weiser WR5 keyway is the alternative. Pick the one that matches the rest of the building so the key blank is right, then use the keying options at checkout: keyed alike if the patio doors should run on one key, keyed different if they shouldn't, or key to a specific code if you already maintain a keying schedule. Two keys ship per lock, and an order of three or more keyed alike ships six keys total.
6) What do I have to specify when ordering Emtek 14A1 multipoint trim?
Six things, and every one of them changes the part that ships. Handing (right or left, viewed from outside), lever style, finish, keyway (Schlage or Weiser WR5), keying arrangement, and the door thickness. Handing is the one people get wrong most often on patio doors, because the trim is not reversible in the field. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right, it's right hand. Get all six on the order and the kit arrives ready to mount to the existing multipoint gearbox.
7) Is the Emtek 14A1 single or double cylinder, and how does the inside operate?
Single cylinder. The key works from the outside only; the inside plate carries a lever with no keyhole, so anyone inside can operate the lock without hunting for a key. That's what you want on a patio or terrace door for egress. If your local code or insurer requires a key on both sides, or you want a thumbturn instead of a keyed exterior, the 14A1 is not that trim, you need the corresponding Configuration #4 thumbturn or non-keyed set.
8) What kind of cylinder does the Emtek 14A1 take, American or Euro profile?
American cylinder, not a Euro profile. That matters on multipoint doors because a lot of European-made gearboxes are built around a Euro profile cylinder, and the two are not interchangeable. The 14A1 comes with its American cylinder in the kit, in either the Schlage or the Weiser WR5 keyway, so you're not sourcing one separately. If the door you're retrofitting currently has a long rectangular Euro cylinder with a cam in the middle, check the gearbox prep before ordering.
9) How big are the Emtek 14A1 Modern plates, and will they cover the marks left by the old trim?
The Modern plates measure 1-1/2 inches by 11 inches, with the mounting holes 7-1/4 inches apart.
