Emtek 17B1-US19 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 17B1 multipoint trim include the multipoint lock body?
No lock body comes with it. The 17B1 is trim only: plates, handles, and the cylinder. The multipoint mortise lock box has to be sourced separately, so if you're replacing a whole system rather than just refreshing the visible hardware, you need the lock case too.
2) What is the handle-to-cylinder center-to-center on the Emtek 17B1 trim, and will it line up with my existing multipoint door prep?
Center-to-center is 6 inches, with the American cylinder hub sitting ABOVE the handle. That combination is what Emtek calls Door Configuration #7. Your door and lock body prep must match that spacing and that cylinder-above orientation, because the plate is drilled for it. If your existing prep puts the key below the lever, or the spacing is anything other than 6 inches, this is the wrong configuration.
3) Do I have to specify handing when ordering Emtek 17B1 multipoint trim?
Handing is required, right hand or left hand, and it isn't field-reversible on the order form. Stand outside the door: the side the hinges are on tells you the hand. Get it wrong and the lever and cylinder orientation won't suit the swing.
4) Can I key the Emtek 17B1 multipoint trim to my existing Schlage or Kwikset keys?
The cylinder is an American-format single cylinder, and you pick the keyway on the order: Schlage keyway (the standard here) or Weiser WR5. Weiser WR5 is the keyway Kwikset-family residential locks use, so that option is the one for matching typical Kwikset/Weiser house keys. You can also order keyed alike across multiple units or keyed different, and there's a field to key to a specific existing code.
5) Is the Emtek 17B1 single cylinder trim key-locked from both sides?
Single cylinder only. Key operates from the exterior, and the interior side works by hand without a key. For a patio door where glass sits next to the lock, some specs call for double cylinder instead, and this trim will not do that. It's also a residential-duty set, not a commercial-grade one.
6) How big are the plates on the Emtek 17B1 modern multipoint trim, and will they cover my old escutcheons?
The plates measure 2 x 10 inches in the Modern (rectangular, contemporary) style. That's a fairly slim plate, so if you're covering the footprint of a wider or taller previous trim, the old screw holes and finish shadow may show. Measure the existing plate before committing.
7) Which levers can I use with Emtek brass multipoint trim?
Any Emtek brass lever pairs with it, and lever style is a required choice on the order. The range runs from the L-Square, T-Bar and R-Bar families in Faceted, Hammered, Knurled, Tribeca, Straight Knurled and White Marble, through cast levers like Athena, Helios, Hermes, Luzern, Poseidon, Stuttgart, Argos, Aston, Basel, Breslin, Dumont, Freestone, Geneva, Hercules, Mercury, Myles, Sion, Spencer and Triton, to Cortina, Manning, Milano, Merrimack, Turino, Coventry, Elan, Ribbon & Reed, Rope, Rustic, Santa Fe, Wembley, Arts & Crafts and Hammered. Because the plates are brass, the lever has to come from the brass collection to match.
8) What finishes does the Emtek 17B1 brass multipoint trim come in?
Seven finishes, each available with either keyway: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel Lifetime (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) and Satin Brass (US4). Worth knowing on a fleet of doors: US3NL unlacquered brass and US10B oil rubbed bronze are living finishes that patina with handling, while US14 lifetime polished nickel holds its appearance. If you're matching existing openings, the living finishes will not match new-out-of-box hardware.
9) Will the lever on this Emtek patio door trim sag over time?
Spring assist is built into every Emtek multipoint trim now, returning the lever to horizontal and keeping it from drooping. That's the usual complaint on heavy patio door levers, and it's handled inside the trim rather than by the lock body.
10) Do I need to give the door thickness when ordering Emtek multipoint lock trim?
There's an optional door thickness field on the order, and it's worth filling in. Multipoint patio doors run thicker than a standard interior door, and the spindle and cylinder length have to suit the actual slab. If you know the thickness, state it.
11) Is the Emtek 17B1 multipoint trim electronic or keypad operated?
Purely mechanical. The 17B1 is key and lever operated with no electronics, no keypad and no wiring. If you want code or app entry on a multipoint patio door, this is not the trim for it.
