1) Does the Emtek 15A3 multi point trim include the multi point lock body, or do I need to order that separately?
Trim only. The 15A3 set gives you the plates and handles; the multi point mortise lock box is not included and has to come separately or already be in the door. If you're replacing worn or dated handles on an existing multi point patio door, that's exactly what this is for. If the lock mechanism itself has failed, the trim won't solve it.
2) How do I know if Door Configuration #5 is the right one for my patio door?
Configuration is set by where the cylinder sits relative to the handle and the spacing between them. The 15A3 is Config #5: Euro profile cylinder prep, cylinder below the handle, 3-5/8 inch center to center between the handle spindle and the cylinder. Measure the existing plate on your door from the center of the handle to the center of the key cylinder. If you get 3-5/8 inches with the cylinder underneath, this is your configuration. Any other spacing or a cylinder above the handle is a different config.
3) Will Emtek multi point trim fit a Therma-Tru or Kolbe patio door?
Emtek lists the 15A3 trim against doors from Crestline, Hoppe, Hurd, KFV, Kolbe & Kolbe, Lincoln, Loewen, Paddock Lockmaster, Peachtree, Semco, Sierra, Oknoplast, Pacific, Signature, Simpson, Therma-Tru, Vetter, Willmar, Windsor and Weathershield. Those manufacturers built doors around multiple lock configurations, so the door brand alone doesn't settle it. Confirm your opening is Config #5 (Euro cylinder below the handle at 3-5/8 inch center to center) and the fit follows.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering Emtek 15A3 multi point trim?
Yes, handing is required, right hand or left hand, and it's not something that can be flipped in the field on multi point trim. Stand outside the door facing it: if the hinges are on the right it's right hand, hinges on the left is left hand. Getting it wrong means the lever and thumbturn orient the wrong way. You also pick the lever style and can note your door thickness on the order.
5) What does the non-keyed thumbturn version of the 15A3 mean, and when would I not want it?
Non-keyed means there's no key cylinder on the exterior plate for this trim, and the interior side gets an American style thumbturn to throw and retract the multi point lock. That works on a patio or garden door where the outside face doesn't need to be locked or unlocked with a key, or where the door is inside a secured yard. If the door is a primary entry that anyone needs to key in from outside, you want the keyed version of the trim instead.
6) What else do I have to pick when I order the 15A3 besides the finish?
Three choices beyond finish. Lever style is required and runs across the Emtek brass lever range, including the L-Square, T-Bar and R-Bar bar levers in Faceted, Hammered, Knurled, Tribeca, Straight Knurled and White Marble, plus named levers like Athena, Helios, Hermes, Luzern, Poseidon, Stuttgart, Cortina, Milano, Coventry, Rope, Rustic and Santa Fe. Handing is required. Door thickness is an optional note you can add. Any Emtek brass lever can be ordered on this trim.
7) Will the Emtek 15A3 plate cover the old plate marks on my door?
The plates measure 1-1/2 by 11 inches. That's a slim modern plate, so if you're coming off a wider or longer escutcheon there will be paint shadow or screw holes left exposed on the stile. Measure your existing plate before ordering. Coming from another Emtek multi point trim of the same modern profile, it covers like for like.
8) Does the Emtek 15A3 fix a sagging patio door lever?
It should. Every current Emtek multi point lock trim includes a spring assist that returns the lever to horizontal and stops the droop you get once the old trim's return spring gives out. That sag is the usual reason a property manager replaces this trim rather than the whole lock. The lock body stays in the door; only the plates and handles change.
9) Does the 15A3 need a Euro profile cylinder, and is one included?
The prep is Euro profile, sitting below the handle. On the non-keyed thumbturn version there's no exterior key cylinder to supply for the trim itself; the interior thumbturn drives the lock. If your existing multi point lock body carries a Euro cylinder, that stays with the lock, not with the trim.
10) What finishes does the Emtek 15A3 brass multi point trim come in?
Seven finishes: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel Lifetime (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) and Satin Brass (US4). The plates and levers are solid brass, so if you're matching other Emtek brass hardware elsewhere in the house the US codes let you carry the same finish across entry sets, levers and this patio trim. Unlacquered brass will patina over time; the others are coated or plated.
11) Is Emtek multi point trim electronic or does it work with a smart lock?
Purely mechanical. The 15A3 has no electronic component, no motor and no wiring; the thumbturn inside operates the multi point lock by hand. If you're after keyless or app entry on a patio door, this trim isn't the path to it.
