1) What comes in the box with the Emtek 2401 doorbell, and do I need to buy screws separately?
The Emtek 2401 ships as a complete trim set: the Rope rosette plate, a lighted push button, and matching screws in the same finish. Emtek does not sell those screws separately, so keep them with the part if you are staging hardware on a jobsite. Note it is the visible trim and button only, not a chime or transformer, so you are reusing or supplying the existing doorbell chime and low voltage wiring.
2) What finishes does the Emtek 2401 Rope rosette doorbell come in?
Seven finishes: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), and French Antique (US7). Unlacquered brass is the one to watch, it has no clear coat and will patina outdoors, which some buyers want and others do not. Lifetime polished brass is the option if you want the bright look to stay bright.
3) Will the Emtek 2401 doorbell match my Emtek entry knobs and levers?
It is built to. The 2401 is brass in Emtek's American Designer theme with the Rope rosette, and the finish codes it is offered in (US3, US3NL, US7, US10B, US15, US15A, US26) are the same codes Emtek uses across its brass knobsets, leversets and handlesets. If your entry set is Rope pattern, this is the matching doorbell trim. Order the doorbell in the identical finish code, not just the same finish name.
4) I want a different rosette shape than the Rope pattern, what other Emtek doorbell plates are there?
Emtek numbers each doorbell by its rosette. Within American Designer, the 2401 is the Rope, the 2406 is Lancaster and the 2407 is Ribbon and Reed. American Classic runs 2400 regular, 2402 oval, 2403 rectangular, 2404 Wilshire, 2408 #8, 2409 Quincy and 2466 Watford. Contemporary options include 2457 Modern, 2458 Disk, 2459 Square, 2460 Neos, 2463 Modern Rectangular and 2465 Urban Modern. Arts and Crafts are 2451 and 2452 hammered. If you want a long vertical plate, the STRETTO 2440 is 1-1/2 x 5 inches and the 2441 is 1-1/2 x 11 inches.
5) Is the Emtek 2401 doorbell button lighted?
Yes, the button supplied with the 2401 is a lighted button, which is what you want for a front entry that gets used after dark. It is carried as an electronic item, so it wires into a standard low voltage doorbell circuit.
6) Is the Emtek 2401 brass doorbell suitable for a commercial building entrance?
It is classed as a residential product. For a single tenant entry, a boutique hotel door or a condo unit it is fine, but for high traffic commercial lobbies or anywhere you need a graded, listed device, specify a commercial rated pushbutton instead. Property managers standardizing a multi-family building often use it on unit doors where the rest of the trim is Emtek brass.
7) Is the Emtek 2401 doorbell plate solid brass or plated zinc?
Brass, both the substrate and the material of record, so the plate and rosette are brass under the finish rather than a plated cast zinc. That matters on an exterior door where the plate sees weather, and it is why the unlacquered brass version (US3NL) can be left to develop a natural patina.
8) Does the Emtek 2401 replace an existing doorbell button, or do I need new wiring?
It is a trim and button replacement for an existing low voltage doorbell circuit. You reuse the two existing bell wires and the chime you already have, swap the old button out, and mount the Rope rosette plate with the matching screws supplied. Because the rosette shape and size differ from whatever was there before, expect to patch or cover the old fastener holes in the trim or brick mould.
