Emtek 5507-US26 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Emtek 5507 STRETTO narrow trim lockset fit a standard 2-1/8 inch bored door?
The 5507 STRETTO uses a 2-1/8 inch cross bore, the same bore a standard bored lockset uses, so an already-drilled door takes it. The difference is the face of the door: the STRETTO trim is a narrow 1-1/2 x 5 inch plate and the prep is a narrow 1-1/4 inch door prep with 3-3/8 inch center-to-center hole spacing. If your existing door was prepped for a round rose, the bore lines up but the through-bolt spacing likely will not, so plan on a fresh prep or a plate that covers the old holes.
2) Is the Emtek 5507 STRETTO lockset keyed, and what does a passage function actually do?
Non-keyed. A passage set latches the door shut and turns from both sides at all times, with no lock at all: no key, no thumbturn, no push button. Use it on hallways, closets, pantries and between rooms. If the door needs to lock from the inside (a bath or a bedroom), a passage set is the wrong function and you want a privacy set instead.
3) Do I have to specify handing on the Emtek 5507 narrow trim set?
Handing is required whenever you pick a lever, and both right hand and left hand are built. Levers are handed because the lever has to droop toward the latch side. Knobs are symmetrical, so handing is not a functional concern with a knob trim, but the order form asks for it either way. Stand outside the door, on the side that swings away from you: hinges on the right is right hand.
4) Does the Emtek 5507 come with the latch and strike, or do I order those separately?
It ships as a complete set: latch and strike plate are in the box. The latch supplied is a 28 degree latch, and the faceplate comes round corner or square corner so it drops into whichever mortise your door edge already has. Backset is adjustable between 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch, with 2-3/8 the standard build, so specify 2-3/4 inch if that is what your door was bored for.
5) How do I know whether I need a 2-3/8 or a 2-3/4 inch backset for the Emtek 5507?
Measure from the edge of the door to the center of the bored hole. Those are the only two backsets in the trade, and the 5507 covers both, with 2-3/8 inch the default unless you call out 2-3/4 inch. Standard interior residential doors are almost always 2-3/8 inch; 2-3/4 inch shows up on wider commercial-style stiles and some older work. Get it wrong and the latch will not reach the hole.
6) Can I pick any Emtek knob or lever with the 5507 STRETTO trim?
Any brass knob or lever in the Emtek line mounts to the 5507, and there are 88 trim styles to choose from, running from contemporary bars (T-Bar, R-Bar, L-Square in faceted, hammered, knurled, Tribeca and white marble) through classic levers like Milano, Turino and Coventry, to crystal knobs like Windsor, Bristol and Georgetown. Inside trim style is a required choice on the order, so pick it up front.
7) Is the Emtek 5507 STRETTO lockset rated for commercial traffic?
Emtek classes the 5507 as residential hardware. It is a solid brass tubular passage set built for homes, multi-family interiors and light-duty openings. For a school corridor, a hospital wing or anywhere you need a cycle-tested Grade 1 or Grade 2 lock on the door, specify a commercial bored or mortise lock instead.
8) What finishes does the Emtek 5507 STRETTO passage set come in, and will they match the rest of my doors?
Seven finishes: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel Lifetime (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) and Satin Brass (US4). Those are standard US finish codes, so if the other openings in the building are already spec'd to a code like US15, the 5507 matches on paper. Unlacquered brass is the exception worth knowing about: it has no clear coat and will patina with handling, which is the point of it, but it will not stay looking like the new one down the hall.
9) Why would I choose a narrow trim lockset like the Emtek STRETTO over a standard rosette set?
Narrow trim exists for doors where a round rose has nowhere to sit. The STRETTO plate is 1-1/2 x 5 inches on a 1-1/4 inch door prep, so it fits a narrow stile: French doors, glass panel doors, and doors with a slim rail or a lot of glass close to the lock edge. On a normal flush slab door with plenty of stile, a standard rose set is the simpler prep. The look is contemporary and the plate is vertical, which is also why people spec it on wide doors purely for the styling.
10) I'm ordering the Emtek 5507 for a job. What do I need to specify?
Four things, all required, plus you are choosing a non-keyed passage function by picking the 5507 in the first place. Specify the finish (seven options), the knob or lever style for the trim, the handing (right or left), and the backset (2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch). If the door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches, call out the extended thickness range as well. Latch and strike come in the box, so there is nothing else to add to complete the opening.
