1) Does the Emtek 6052 Tuscany dummy sideplate set need a hole bored in the door?
No boring needed. The 6052 dummy pair is surface mount, so it screws onto the face of the door with no 2-1/8 inch cross bore and no latch mortise. That makes it the right choice for closet, pantry, and French door panels that are inactive, or for a door already installed where you don't want to cut it.
2) Will the Emtek 6052 dummy sideplate work on a 1-3/8 inch door as well as a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes. The 6052 is rated for door thickness from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, which covers standard interior doors and heavier 1-3/4 inch panels. There's also a door thickness field on the order so you can state the actual thickness you're working with.
3) Does a dummy sideplate lockset latch or lock the door at all?
It does not. A dummy is pull-and-push trim only, non-keyed, with no latch and no turn, so there's nothing holding the door closed. Use it on a fixed French door panel, a closet with a ball catch or roller catch, or the inactive leaf of a pair. If you need the door to stay shut or hold privacy, you need a passage or privacy set instead.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering the Emtek 6052 Tuscany sideplate set?
Three things. Finish, either Flat Black Bronze (FB) or Medium Bronze (MB). The inside trim, chosen from 16 Tuscany lost wax cast bronze styles: Medici, Napoli, Octagon, and Padua levers, or Octagon, Parma, Petal, Diamond, Georgetown, Old Town, Bristol, Hampton, Lowell, Windsor, Ebony Porcelain, and Ice White Porcelain knobs. And handing, right or left, which is required because the lever castings are handed. Door thickness can be entered as well.
5) How long is the sideplate on the Emtek 6052, and will it fit a narrow stile French door?
The plate is 8-1/4 inches, measured along its length, so it needs a stile tall enough and wide enough to carry that escutcheon without the edges overhanging the glass bead or the door edge. On narrow-stile French panels, measure your flat stile face before committing to the 8-1/4 inch plate.
6) Can I match the Emtek 6052 dummy to working knobsets on the other doors in the house?
Yes, that's how the Tuscany program is built. The 6052 can be ordered with any Lost Wax Cast Bronze knob or lever style, so the dummy on a closet or French panel carries the same Medici, Windsor, Parma or Porcelain trim as the passage and privacy sets down the hall, in the same Flat Black Bronze or Medium Bronze finish.
7) I need a sideplate lever set that actually locks, not a dummy - what should I order instead of the Emtek 6052?
The Emtek 6052 Tuscany is a non-keyed dummy set, so it has no latch operation or locking. For a locking sideplate lever set, the Omnia D12036A is a single cylinder deadbolt lever lockset in solid brass, and the Omnia D12036AC is the double cylinder version with a sideplate design - double cylinder means key operation on both sides rather than a thumbturn inside.
8) Is the Emtek 6052 dummy sold as a pair or a single plate?
It ships as a pair, one sideplate for each face of the door, which is what you want on a French door panel or a door that's pulled from both sides. If you only need trim on one face you're buying more than you need.
9) Do I need to worry about handing on a dummy knob instead of a lever?
Handing is called out for leversets because the lever swings to one side and has to point away from the hinges. Round and porcelain knob styles are symmetrical, so the hand only tells us which face gets which orientation of plate. Handing is still a required selection on the order, so pick the hand of the door either way.
10) Is the Emtek 6052 sideplate lockset suitable for a commercial building or apartment corridor?
It's classified residential. The Tuscany Bronze sideplate line is decorative cast bronze for houses, custom homes, and high-end multi-family interiors, not a graded commercial lockset. For corridor and stairwell openings in a commercial facility, look at a cylindrical or mortise lock line rated for that duty instead.
11) Does the Omnia D12036PD dummy set do the same job as the Emtek 6052 Tuscany dummy pair?
Both are non-operating dummy trim for an inactive or decorative door leaf. The Emtek 6052 Tuscany dummy is surface mounted with no door prep required and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, in bronze with a choice of Flat Black Bronze or Medium Bronze. The Omnia D12036PD is a solid brass dummy deadbolt lever lockset with plates at 5-1/2 inch center to center, so the plate layout and material differ from the 8-1/4 inch cast bronze Tuscany sideplate.
12) Which of these looks like a substitute for the Emtek 6052 Tuscany dummy but is not?
The Omnia D12036A and D12036AC are lever locksets with a deadbolt - single cylinder and double cylinder respectively - so despite the similar sideplate appearance they require full door prep for a bolt and cylinder.
