Emtek 6102-FB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Emtek 6102 Tuscany sideplate lockset fit a standard 2-1/8 inch bored door prep?
Yes. The 6102 Tuscany sideplate set drops onto one standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore, so a door already bored for a tubular knob or lever takes it without new boring. Door thickness range is 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, which covers both a modern 1-3/4 inch door and an older 1-3/8 inch interior slab. The 8-1/4 inch sideplate itself mounts on the face of the door, so plan on mortising for the plate even though the bore is standard.
2) Does the Emtek 6102 lock, or is it just a passage set?
Passage only. The 6102 Tuscany latches the door closed and nothing more, with no key and no privacy button or thumbturn. Use it on hallways, closets, pantries, and any opening where you only need the door to stay shut. For a bedroom or bath you want a privacy function instead, and for an entry you want a keyed set.
3) What backset do I order for the Emtek 6102 Tuscany sideplate lockset?
Both are offered: 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch. The standard latch ships 2-3/8 inch, so if your existing bore is centered 2-3/4 inches back from the door edge you have to call that out on the order. Measure from the edge of the door to the center of the bore before you pick. Those two are the only backsets used on residential bored locks, so one of them will match.
4) Do I have to specify handing on an Emtek Tuscany sideplate passage set?
Handing is required, and it is required on every order here whether you pick a lever or a knob. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right it is right hand, on your left it is left hand. Levers in particular cannot be flipped in the field the way a symmetrical knob can, so getting this wrong means a lever pointing the wrong direction on the wall.
5) What is the difference between the Emtek 6102 Tuscany sideplate lockset and the Omnia D12036A?
They do different jobs on the door. The Emtek 6102 Tuscany is a passage, non-keyed tubular lockset - the latch retracts from either side and there is no key and no lock, so it is used on halls, closets and other openings that only need to latch shut. The Omnia D12036A is a single cylinder deadbolt lever lockset, so it adds a keyed deadbolt function for an opening that has to be secured. If the door is interior and never needs to be locked, the 6102 in Flat Black Bronze or Medium Bronze is the passage set; if it is an entry, the deadbolt function is what you want.
6) I need a keyed sideplate set for a door that has to lock from both sides - what should I use instead of a passage set?
A passage set like the Emtek 6102 Tuscany will not do it, because it is non-keyed and its only function is passage. For an opening that must be keyed from both faces, the Omnia D12036AC is a double cylinder deadbolt lever lockset with a sideplate design and solid brass construction - double cylinder means a key is required on the inside as well as the outside. Check your local egress code before specifying double cylinder on an exit door.
7) The door is a false or inactive leaf with no latch - is a passage set the right call?
No. The Emtek 6102 Tuscany passage set is a complete working set that includes the knob or lever, latch and strike plate, and it is bored for a standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore with a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset - all of which assumes a latching door. For a false leaf, a closet slab that is held by a ball catch, or an inactive door of a pair, the Omnia D12036PD is a double dummy deadbolt lever lockset with plates on a 5-1/2 inch center to center, which surface mounts with no latch at all.
8) Which knob and lever styles can I put on the Emtek Tuscany 6102 sideplate?
Sixteen designs, and any of them can go on this plate. Levers: Medici, Napoli, Octagon, Padua. Knobs: Octagon, Parma, Petal, Diamond, Georgetown, Old Town, Bristol, Hampton, Lowell, Windsor, plus Ebony and Ice White porcelain. Choosing the trim is part of the order, not an upgrade, so decide it up front. Porcelain knobs read very differently from the cast bronze ones if you are trying to match existing hardware in the house.
9) Do I need to know the latch faceplate corner style before ordering the Emtek 6102?
Yes, if you are dropping into an existing mortise for the latch. The latch faceplate comes round corner or square corner. Look at the pocket already cut in the door edge: a rounded pocket from a router jig takes the round corner face, a chiseled square pocket takes the square. Matching it saves recutting the edge.
10) I need a deadbolt with a sideplate, not a passage set. What else is there?
The 6102 Tuscany is passage only, so it will not secure anything. For a sideplate lever set that actually locks, look at the Omnia D12036A, a single cylinder deadbolt lever lockset in solid brass, or the D12036AC, the double cylinder version keyed on both sides for a door with glass beside it. There is also the D12036PD, a double dummy version with plates and 5-1/2 inch center to center, which is pull-only trim for a door that does not latch at all.
