OATEY 90907 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are these Oatey closet bolts long enough for a bathroom with tile added over the original floor?
That is exactly what the Oatey 90907 Johni Quick Bolts are for. The bolts are 5/16 inch diameter by 3-1/2 inches long solid brass, extra long so a toilet can still be pulled down to an existing flange after new floor layers (tile, backer, underlayment) have raised the bowl above the flange. If your flange sits flush with a single-layer floor, a standard-length closet bolt is usually plenty; the extra length matters once you have stacked finishes.
2) What comes in the Oatey 90907 Johni Quick Bolt kit, or do I need to buy nuts and washers separately?
Each kit is complete for one toilet: two solid brass bolts, two gold-color plastic washers, two cap nuts and two stainless steel washers. Nothing extra to source for the bolt side. You still need a wax ring or bowl gasket, and a closet flange if you are replacing that too.
3) Will 5/16 inch closet bolts fit a standard toilet flange?
Yes. 5/16 inch is the standard closet bolt diameter, and the slots on a typical cast iron, PVC or ABS closet flange are cut to take it. The Oatey 90907 bolts drop into the flange slots, the plastic washer holds them upright while you set the bowl, then the stainless washer and cap nut go on top.
4) Are these bolts brass all the way through, or just brass plated?
Solid brass, not plated. The bolt body is solid brass and the flat washers under the cap nuts are stainless steel, so nothing in the assembly rusts into the flange slot the way a plated steel bolt does. That is the practical reason to use brass in a wet bathroom floor you may have to open again years later.
5) Do these Oatey Johni bolts work on a wall-hung toilet?
No. These are closet bolts for a floor mounted toilet, bolting the bowl down into a floor closet flange. A wall-hung or wall-mounted bowl hangs on a carrier with threaded studs supplied for that carrier, and these bolts will not serve that mount.
6) How many Oatey 90907 kits do I need for a multi-unit turn with several toilets?
One kit per toilet. Each 90907 pack holds two bolts with their nuts and washers, which is one bowl's worth, so a 12-unit bathroom refresh takes 12 kits. For property managers standardizing a maintenance cart, the extra-long 3-1/2 inch bolt covers both flush-flange and raised-floor openings, so you can stock one bolt instead of two lengths.
7) Can I use these for a brand new toilet install, or are they only for replacements?
Both. The Oatey 90907 bolts are used on new water closet installations and on replacement of existing water closets, securing the bowl to the flange in either case.
8) Can I cut these bolts down if they stick up too far above the toilet base?
Yes, trimming excess is normal practice with a 3-1/2 inch extra-long bolt: set the bowl, run the nut down, then cut the stud just above the nut before snapping on the cap. Brass cuts easily with a hacksaw or mini cutter, which is part of why solid brass is used here rather than hardened steel.
9) Are there any hazmat restrictions on shipping Oatey Johni Quick Bolts?
The 90907 bolt kit is not classified as hazardous under OSHA 1910.1200, so there is no hazardous-material handling attached to it. It is a light item, listed at 0.1 for product weight.
