When using an electric strike in conjunction with a vertical-rod device, it is necessary that:

  • The bottom rod of the exit device be removed or made inoperative
  • The latchbolt of the exit device be the "Pullman" or beveled type
  • The latchbolt be free-latching and remain projected while the door is open. Mechanisms that hold the latchbolt retracted while the door is open, and automatically release it when the door is closed, must be removed or made inoperative

HES 310-4-2 24D 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What do I have to change on my exit device before an HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 electric strike will work?
Three things have to be true on the exit device. The bottom rod has to be removed or made inoperative, so the door is held only at the top where the strike is. The latchbolt has to be the Pullman or beveled type, since that is the only latch shape this keeper accepts. And the latchbolt must be free-latching, staying projected while the door stands open; if your device holds the latch retracted while open and releases it on closing, that mechanism has to be removed or disabled. Budget for a less-bottom-rod conversion on both leaves when you plan the job.
2) Does the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 lock or unlock when the power drops?
Both behaviors are orderable. Fail secure is the standard configuration, meaning the door stays locked when power is lost, and fail safe is available as an option that unlocks on power loss. Fail safe versus fail secure is field selectable on this strike, and the two configurations are stocked as separate ordering choices. Fire exit hardware and egress rules in your jurisdiction usually drive which one the drawing calls for, but free egress from the inside is always maintained by the exit device itself.
3) Can I use the 310-4-2 electric strike if my doors bind and the exit device latch is under pressure?
No. The 310-4-2 is not preload capable, so it should not be applied where wind, stack pressure, a closer, or a door that binds puts side load on the latchbolt while the strike is being released. On a pressurized stairwell or a windy exterior pair, that limitation is the thing that decides against it. Where the opening is well hung and free of preload, the adjustable keeper handles ordinary door and frame misalignment.
4) What is the difference between the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 and a single-door rim exit electric strike?
The 310-4-2 is a double-door unit: one surface mounted stainless assembly with two keepers at a set center-to-center spacing, made to catch the top latchbolts on both leaves of a pair that has no center mullion. A single-door rim strike catches one Pullman latchbolt only. If your opening is one leaf, or a pair with a removable mullion where each leaf carries a rim device latching into the mullion, you want a single rim strike instead, like the SDC 30-4, which is a stainless rim mount strike for a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt. For a mortise lock opening the strike type changes again, and the Securitron MUNL or Von Duprin 6210 covers that.
5) What electric strike works with a pair of doors that has surface vertical rod exit devices?
The HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 is built for exactly that: it is a surface vertical rod strike for both leaves of a pair of doors, sized for vertical rod spacing between 4-5/8 inches and 5-3/8 inches, with a PK keeper standard on each side. It is Grade 1, non-handed, all stainless steel, and field selectable fail safe or fail secure at 12/24 VDC. The Rockwood ESK-DBL is the other double-door strike in the group, a Grade 1 unit in the 310-1 series with a 3/4 keeper. Nearly every other strike here is a single-leaf device for one latch: the Von Duprin 4211 serves cylindrical locks, the Von Duprin 6210 serves mortise locks, and the SDC 15 Series is a single 5/8 inch latchbolt strike.
6) The opening is a fire rated pair - what electric strike should be used instead of the Folger Adam 310-4-2?
The Folger Adam 310-4-2 carries no fire rating, so a fire rated opening needs a different strike. The Rockwood ESK-DBL is the fire rated double door strike, a Grade 1 unit in the 310-1 series with a 3/4 keeper. For fire rated single leaf work, the Camden CX-ED1410 and CX-ED1420 are Grade 1 ANSI fire rated universal strikes, the Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe or fail secure and a latchbolt monitor, and the Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 modular strike with a 3-hour UL 10C rating in fail secure for mortise or cylindrical locks.
7) Which electric strike takes a Pullman latchbolt on a single door rim exit device?
The Folger Adam 310-4-2 accepts rim exit devices with a swinging Pullman style latchbolt, but its keepers are laid out for both leaves of a pair. For a single leaf rim device with a Pullman latch, the SDC 30-4 Series is a rim mount strike built for a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt in stainless steel construction. The Hager 2945 is another rim exit strike, fire rated, with field selectable fail safe or fail secure operation and a latchbolt monitor.
8) The exit device has a 5/8 inch deadlatch, not a Pullman latch - what electric strike fits?
The Folger Adam 310-4-2 requires the exit device latchbolt to be the Pullman or beveled type, free latching and projected while the door is open, so a standard deadlatch is outside what it takes. Strikes built for a 5/8 inch latchbolt include the SDC 15 Series, a value strike with 12/24 VDC operation, the fire rated SDC 45F Series with a radius corner faceplate, the Hager 2925 with field reversible fail safe or fail secure operation, and the Adams Rite 7240, a fire-rated strike for cylindrical locksets with 5/8 inch latchbolt projection. For a 1/2 inch latchbolt, the SDC 25 Series covers it.
9) How much current does the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 draw and what voltage do I run to it?
Continuous duty draw is 510 mA at 12 VDC or 250 mA at 24 VDC, and the strike is ordered as either a 12V or a 24V unit. Size your power supply from the higher figure if you are running 12 volts, and remember that a pair of doors takes one complete Pac per opening. Connection is by plug-in connector rather than screw terminals. If you are switching an AC source or dealing with buzz, the 2001-1 wire-in bridge rectifier and 2001M plug-in rectifier are the matching accessories, and the 2005M3 SMART Pac III conditions the power feed.
10) Can I get latch monitoring on the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 for my access control system?
Yes, by ordering the LCBMA option: a latchbolt and locking cam monitor with an auxiliary switch. That gives the head end both a door-secure signal from the latchbolt and confirmation of the locking cam position, which is what an integrator needs to prove the opening actually relatched rather than just that the strike was de-energized. The monitor is an ordering choice made up front, so specify it on the purchase order.
11) Will an HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 hold up on a high traffic entrance that gets abused?
This is a heavy duty strike built for exactly that. Static strength is 1,500 lbs, dynamic strength is 70 ft-lbs, and endurance is rated at 1 million cycles, with ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 and UL 1034 burglary-resistant listing behind it. The body is stainless steel throughout for strength and corrosion resistance, and the keeper is adjustable to take up door and frame misalignment, which is the usual reason a strike on a busy pair starts failing to relatch. It is also UL 294 listed and RoHS compliant.
12) Do I have to specify handing when I order a 310-4-2 electric strike?
No handing to specify. The Folger Adam 310-4-2 is non-handed, and because it is a double-door unit it serves both leaves of the pair from one surface mounted assembly. What you do have to get right is the vertical rod spacing, since that is what separates the four models in the 310-4-X family.
13) What else could I buy instead of the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 for a double door with vertical rods?
Within the same double-door surface concept, the Rockwood double door electric strike with a 3/4 keeper is the closest peer we carry, and it is Grade 1 and fire rated in the 310-1 series. The other Grade 1 heavy duty strikes in the category, the Alarm Controls AES-100, Locknetics MDS100 and MS100, and the Von Duprin 4211, are single-opening strikes, not two-keeper double door units, so they solve a different opening. Swapping to one of those means changing the door hardware scheme, not just the strike.
14) Is the HES 310-4-2 a complete kit or do I need to order more parts to finish the install?
It ships as a complete Pac for surface vertical rods, so the strike assembly and keepers come together as one commercial installation package with a plug-in connector for the wiring. What it does not include is power supply gear or signal conditioning. Depending on your source and head end, add the 2001-1 wire-in bridge rectifier or 2001M plug-in rectifier, the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter, the 2005M3 SMART Pac III, or the 2006M plug-in buzzer. Also plan on the less-bottom-rod work to your exit devices, which is separate labor and parts.
15) Can the Folger Adam 310-4-2 be used on an aluminum storefront jamb?
The 310-4-2 is a surface mounted vertical rod strike for both leaves of a pair with rim exit devices, not a narrow jamb strike. Aluminum storefront jambs are the Adams Rite territory: the 7100 Series and the 7160 are electric strikes for aluminum jambs with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate. For hollow metal and wood jambs at the same faceplate size, the Adams Rite 7170 covers it. None of those three carries a fire rating, the same as the 310-4-2.
16) Is there a lighter duty electric strike than the Folger Adam 310-4-2 for a low traffic interior door?
The 310-4-2 is a heavy duty, all stainless steel unit rated at 1,500 lbs static strength, 70 ft-lbs dynamic, and 1,000,000 cycles, sized for a pair of doors on vertical rods. Lighter single-door options in the group include the Trine 001 Series, a fail-secure light commercial strike with a 5-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch faceplate, the RCI 15BS economy strike for special offset latch entry with fail-secure operation, and the SDC 25 Series value strike for 1/2 inch latchbolts. All three are fixed single-leaf strikes and will not serve a vertical rod pair.
17) Which electric strikes besides the Folger Adam 310-4-2 offer latchbolt monitoring?
The 310-4-2 can be ordered with the LCBMA option, a latchbolt and locking cam monitor with auxiliary switch, alongside a no-monitor build. Among the comparables, the Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with a latchbolt monitor and field selectable fail safe or fail secure operation, the Dortronics 3300 Series carries a latch bolt sensing switch at 12/24VDC with a strike plate for ANSI prep at 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches, and the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a fire rated dual monitor Grade 1 strike supplied with eight faceplates.
18) What Grade 1 heavy duty electric strikes compare to the Folger Adam 310-4-2?
The 310-4-2 is Grade 1 with all stainless steel construction, 1,500 lbs static strength, 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, and 1,000,000 cycles of endurance, configured for both leaves of a pair on surface vertical rods. On the single-leaf side, the Alarm Controls AES-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty strike, the Securitron MUNL is a Grade 1 fire rated mortise unlatch strike, and the Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 heavy duty modular strike for mortise or cylindrical locks in satin stainless steel, fail-secure, with a 3-hour UL 10C rating. The Locknetics MDS100 and MS100 are heavy duty strikes as well.
19) What finishes does the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 come in to match the rest of my hardware?
Six finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless steel, and 630 satin stainless steel. If you are standardizing a building on satin chrome-look hardware, 630 is the match; 629 is the polished version of the same stainless. Note the strike body itself is stainless steel regardless of the finish you pick.
20) Is there an electric strike that avoids cutting the frame, unlike the Folger Adam 310-4-2?
The 310-4-2 is a surface mounted vertical rod strike, so the mounting work is on the frame face at the head of a pair. If frame cutting is the concern, the Locknetics NC450 is a no cut electric strike. The Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a fire rated low profile universal strike shipped with four faceplates, which gives flexibility on how the existing prep is covered.
