Note: Double-door models are available with 4 different center-to center dimensions between latchbolt keepers. Keepers are wide enough to compensate for vertical-rod exit bolts which may be as much as 3/8" off center-to-center dimension, either way.

When using an electric strike in conjunction with a vertical-rod device, it is necessary that:

  • The bottom rod of the exit device be removed or made inoperative
  • The latchbolt of the exit device be the "Pullman" or beveled type
  • The latchbolt be free-latching and remain projected while the door is open. Mechanisms that hold the latchbolt retracted while the door is open, and automatically release it when the door is closed, must be removed or made inoperative

NOTE: The electric strike will not operate with a deadbolt stye vertical rod.

1) How do I pick between the HES 310-6-1, 310-6-2, 310-6-3 and 310-6-30 for a pair of doors?
Measure the center-to-center spacing between the vertical rod latchbolts on the two leaves, then match it: 310-6-30 covers 2-5/8 to 3-3/8 inches, 310-6-1 covers 4 to 4-3/4 inches, 310-6-2 covers 4-5/8 to 5-3/8 inches, and 310-6-3 covers 5-1/4 to 6 inches. The keepers are wide enough to absorb bolts sitting as much as 3/8 inch off the nominal center-to-center dimension either way, so a small field variance won't cost you the fit.
2) Will an HES 310-6 electric strike work with my vertical rod exit device?
Three conditions have to be met. The exit device latchbolt must be a Pullman or beveled type, it must be free-latching and stay projected while the door stands open, and the bottom rod has to be removed or made inoperative. Devices with a mechanism that holds the latch retracted while the door is open and drops it when the door closes must have that feature disabled. A deadbolt-style vertical rod will not work with this strike at all.
3) I only need to electrify the active leaf of a pair, not both. Which 310-6 do I order?
The 310-6-8 is the one built for the active leaf alone, and it ships with the PK keeper like the rest of the family. The numbered models (310-6-1, -2, -3 and -30) are dual-keeper units for both leaves of a pair, sorted by rod spacing, so ordering one of those for a single-leaf job gives you a keeper you have no rod for.
4) Is the HES 310-6 fail safe or fail secure, and do I have to decide when I order?
Fail secure is the standard configuration, and the mode is field selectable, so the strike can be set either way on the job. Fail safe is also called out as an ordering option. Fail secure keeps the door locked when power drops (the exit device still lets people out from the inside); fail safe releases the keeper on power loss, which is what an egress or free-access scheme usually calls for.
5) Can I use the HES 310-6 on a fire rated door opening?
No. The 310-6 vertical rod strike is not fire rated, and a fire door needs a fire rated, fail secure electric strike so the opening stays positively latched. On top of that, this application requires the bottom rod of the exit device be removed or made inoperative, which a fire exit device cannot have done to it. For a rated pair, use a fire rated electric strike or an electrified trim solution instead.
6) What voltage and current draw should I size my power supply for on an HES 310-6 strike?
The 310-6 runs on 12 or 24 VDC and is continuous duty: 510 mA at 12 VDC, or 250 mA at 24 VDC. Running 24 volts roughly halves the current per strike, which matters when you're powering both leaves of a pair off one supply. Voltage is an order option, so specify 12V or 24V to match the supply you're feeding it from.
7) My exit doors sit under stack pressure and bind against the frame. Is the HES 310-6 the right strike?
Not for a preloaded opening. The 310-6 is not preload capable, meaning it isn't rated to release the keeper while the latchbolt is being pushed sideways by a door under pressure from wind, HVAC stack effect, or a heavy closer holding tension. On stairwells and vestibules where that load is present, specify a preload-rated strike instead, or relieve the load on the opening.
8) Does the HES 310-6 need to be handed left or right?
No handing to specify. The 310-6 is non-handed, and the keeper is adjustable to take up door and frame misalignment, so one part number covers either swing and you can dial out a frame that isn't sitting perfectly.
9) Will the HES 310-6 hold up on a high traffic entrance that gets abused?
It's built for it. Static strength is 1,500 lbs, dynamic strength 70 ft-lbs, and endurance is rated at 1 million cycles, with ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. The body is stainless steel throughout for strength and corrosion resistance, and the construction is tamper resistant. That is the specification set you want on a school, hospital or retail main entrance rather than a light commercial strike.
10) I need to know at the head end whether the door actually latched. Does the HES 310-6 offer monitoring?
Order the LCBMA option. It adds a latchbolt and locking cam monitor with an auxiliary switch, so the access control system sees both that the latchbolt is present in the keeper and that the cam has relocked, not just that the strike was energized. On a pair with the bottom rod defeated, that latch confirmation is worth having. Without the option specified, the strike ships unmonitored.
11) Can I put the HES 310-6 on an exterior door or a gate?
Keep it inside. The 310-6 is not outdoor rated and not windstorm rated, so a weather-exposed opening, a storm shelter, or a hurricane-rated assembly is outside what it's specified for. The stainless body gives corrosion resistance for interior and protected openings, but that's not the same as an exterior listing.
