310-6-1

For both leaves of a pair of doors when spacing of the vertical rods is between 4" and 4-3/4".

PK keeper standard

310-6-2

For both leaves of a pair of doors when spacing of the vertical rods is between 4-5/8" and 5-3/8".

PK keeper standard

310-6-3

For both leaves of a pair of doors when spacing of the vertical rods is between 5-1/4" and 6".

PK keeper standard

310-6-30

For both leaves of a pair of doors when spacing of the vertical rods is between 2-5/8" and 3-3/8".

PK keeper standard

Note: Double-door models are available with 4 different center-to center dimensions between latchbolt keepers. Keepers are wide enough to compensate for vertical-rod exit bolts which may be as much as 3/8" off center-to-center dimension, either way.

When using an electric strike in conjunction with a vertical-rod device, it is necessary that:

  1. The bottom rod of the exit device be removed or made inoperative
  2. The latchbolt of the exit device be the "Pullman" or beveled type
  3. The latchbolt be free-latching and remain projected while the door is open. Mechanisms that hold the latchbolt retracted while the door is open, and automatically release it when the door is closed, must be removed or made inoperative

NOTE: The electric strike will not operate with a deadbolt stye vertical rod.

HES 310-6-8 24D 627 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES 310-6-8 electric strike work with a concealed vertical rod exit device that has a deadbolt-style rod?
No. The 310-6-8 will not operate with a deadbolt style vertical rod. The exit device latchbolt has to be the Pullman or beveled type, and it has to be free-latching, meaning it stays projected while the door is open. If the device holds the latch retracted while the door stands open and drops it when the door closes, that mechanism has to be removed or disabled. The bottom rod also has to come out or be made inoperative, since the strike only controls the top latch point.
2) Is the HES 310-6-8 for one door or both leaves of a pair?
Active leaf only. The 310-6-8 is the single-keeper version for the active leaf of a pair, and it ships with the PK keeper standard. If you need to release both leaves, you want a two-keeper model instead, chosen by the center-to-center spacing of the vertical rods: the 310-6-30 for 2-5/8 to 3-3/8 inches, the 310-6-1 for 4 to 4-3/4 inches, the 310-6-2 for 4-5/8 to 5-3/8 inches, and the 310-6-3 for 5-1/4 to 6 inches. Measure the rod spacing before you order.
3) What do I have to specify when ordering the HES Folger Adam 310-6-8?
Four choices. Voltage, 12V or 24V. Fail-secure or fail-safe. Finish, either 627 satin aluminum or 612 satin bronze oil-rubbed. And monitoring, either none or LCBMA, the latchbolt and locking cam monitor with auxiliary switch. All sixteen combinations of those four are orderable, so any finish can be had at either voltage with or without monitoring.
4) Is the HES 310-6-8 electric strike fire rated for a labeled door opening?
No, the 310-6-8 is not fire rated, so keep it off labeled fire door assemblies. It is UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and UL 294 listed for access control use, and it meets ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. For a labeled pair you need a fire rated strike, and note that a fire door's positive latching cannot be defeated by a fail-safe release in any case.
5) What power supply do I need for the HES Folger Adam 310-6-8, and how much current does it draw?
12 or 24 VDC, and the draw is continuous duty: 510 mA at 12 VDC or 250 mA at 24 VDC. Size the supply on the voltage you order, and if you are running several strikes off one supply the 24V option halves the load per device. It is DC only, so an AC transformer needs a rectifier: HES lists the 2001-1 wire-in bridge rectifier and the 2001M plug-in version for that.
6) Can I switch the HES 310 strike between fail-safe and fail-secure in the field, or do I order it one way?
Field selectable on the 310-6-8. Fail secure is how it ships standard, so the door stays locked when power drops and you get in with the exit device from the egress side either way. Fail safe unlocks on power loss, which is what an access-controlled opening on a fire alarm release usually wants. Because the setting is selectable in the field, a stocking contractor can carry one strike and set it to suit the opening.
7) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand version of the HES 310 vertical strike?
Handing does not apply. The 310-6-8 is non-handed, so one part covers a left or right hand active leaf. The keeper also adjusts to take up door and frame misalignment, which is what usually bites you on a pair that has settled.
8) How much abuse will the HES 310 electric strike take on a high traffic entrance?
1,500 lbs static strength, 70 ft-lbs dynamic, and a million cycle endurance rating, with the body built entirely of stainless steel for strength and corrosion resistance. That is the spec set you want on a school, hospital, or apartment entry that gets pulled and shouldered all day. It is not outdoor rated, so plan it for an opening that is protected from the weather.
9) Can the HES 310 strike tell my access control panel whether the door is actually latched?
Order the LCBMA option. That adds a latchbolt and locking cam monitor with an auxiliary switch, so the panel sees both that the exit device latchbolt is seated in the keeper and that the strike's locking cam has returned to the locked position. Two separate confirmations, not just a door position contact. Without LCBMA the strike ships unmonitored, and there is no way to add the switching later without changing the strike.
10) Will the HES 310 electric strike work if the door is under pressure from a closer or stack pressure?
No, the 310-6-8 is not preload capable. On a stairwell or a door that a closer holds hard into the frame, latch preload can keep the strike from releasing. If your opening sees consistent pressure against the latch, you need a preload rated strike rather than this one. On a normal interior pair with a properly adjusted closer, it is not a concern.
11) Does the HES 310 keeper have to line up exactly with my exit device latchbolt?
There is tolerance built in. The keepers are wide enough to compensate for vertical-rod exit bolts sitting as much as 3/8 inch off the nominal center-to-center dimension, either direction, and the keeper itself is adjustable for door and frame misalignment. That said, the double-leaf models are sold by center-to-center range, so measure the rod spacing on a pair before choosing between the 310-6-30, -1, -2 and -3.
12) What else should I order with an HES 310 electric strike to finish the installation?
Depends on the supply and the job. Running off AC means a rectifier, the 2001-1 wire-in or the 2001M plug-in. The 2005M3 SMART Pac III handles voltage regulation and current management on the run. The 2004M ElectroLynx adapter lets the strike plug into an ElectroLynx wiring harness rather than being spliced in, and the 2006M plug-in buzzer gives an audible cue when the strike is released. The strike itself has a plug-in connector, so the head-of-frame connection does not have to be a wire nut splice.
