When using an electric strike in conjunction with a vertical-rod device, it is necessary that:

  • The latchbolt of the exit device be the "Pullman" or beveled type
  • The latchbolt be free-latching and remain projected while the door is open. Mechanisms that hold the latchbolt retracted while the door is open, and automatically release it when the door is closed, must be removed or made inoperative

1) What vertical rod spacing does the HES Folger Adam 310-4-3 electric strike fit on a pair of doors?
The 310-4-3 covers pairs where the center-to-center spacing between the vertical rod latchbolts runs 5-1/4 to 6 inches. The keepers are wide enough to absorb exit bolts sitting as much as 3/8 inch off that center-to-center dimension either way, so a slightly out-of-spec pair still works. If your rods measure tighter, HES builds the same strike in three other spacings: 4 to 4-3/4 inches (310-4-1), 4-5/8 to 5-3/8 inches (310-4-2), and 2-5/8 to 3-3/8 inches (310-4-30). Measure the rod centers before you order, because the spacing is the one thing that cannot be adjusted in the field.
2) Can I use an HES 310-4-3 electric strike with my existing vertical rod exit devices, or do I have to change the devices?
Three conditions have to be met on the exit device before this strike will work. The bottom rod must be removed or made inoperative, so you are converting the pair to less-bottom-rod. The latchbolt has to be the Pullman or beveled type, which is what the 310-4 series is built to accept.
