HES 732 24D 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Folger Adam 732 electric strike work in a wood frame?
Yes, the 732 is the wood frame version of the Folger Adam 700 Series. It uses an offset solenoid so the body clears wood jamb framing, and it takes latchbolts with a 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch throw. If your latchbolt throws 3/4 inch, order the 732-75 instead, which comes with the 3/4 inch PK keeper. For hollow metal frames the equivalent models are the 712 and 712-75.
2) How strong is the Folger Adam 732 strike, and is it enough for a high abuse opening?
It is built for exactly that. Static strength is 1,500 lbs and dynamic strength is 70 ft-lbs, the body is all stainless steel, and it is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. HES also lists it as UL 1034 burglary resistant. That combination is what puts it in institutional, detention-adjacent and heavy traffic commercial work rather than light duty entry doors.
3) What voltage and current draw should I size my power supply for on the 732 strike?
The 732 runs 12 or 24 VDC, and you pick the voltage when you order (it is not field selectable on this model). Continuous duty draw is .29 amps at 12VDC and .15 amps at 24VDC. Size the supply for continuous duty if the strike will be energized for long periods, which is the case on any fail safe installation.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering a Folger Adam 732 electric strike?
Four choices. Voltage, 12V or 24V. Fail secure (the standard, and the only one that holds the fire rating) or fail safe. Whether you want the LBMLCM latchbolt and locking cam monitor built in, or the plain complete strike pac. And finish: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless, or 630 satin stainless.
5) Does the LBMLCM monitor option work reliably with any latchbolt?
Not unconditionally. With a 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch keeper, latchbolt detection can depend on the door gap. On the 3/4 inch keeper models the gap must not exceed 1/8 inch for the monitor to function. If your door hangs with a wide gap, plan on adjusting it or the latchbolt monitor may not report reliably. The LBMLCM reports both latchbolt position and locking cam position.
6) Will the Folger Adam 700 Series strike work with a Sargent 8200 or Best 40 Series mortise lock?
The 712-75, 732-75 and 742-75 with LBMLCM are listed as compatible with Sargent 78/8200 Series or Best 40 Series mortise locks using a 3/4 inch latchbolt. Two things to plan for: these require relocating the strike centerline when used with mortise locks, and HES asks that you consult their support specifically on Best 40 Series applications. For other manufacturers' mortise locks, check with support before cutting the frame.
7) What is the closest Grade 1 fire-rated alternative to the Folger Adam 732 electric strike?
The Folger Adam 732 is a Grade 1, fire-rated electric strike for mortise or cylindrical locks running 12/24 VDC. The Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 modular electric strike for mortise or cylindrical locks with a 3-hour UL 10C fire rating in fail-secure, in satin stainless steel. The Von Duprin 4211 32D is a Grade 1 fire-rated heavy duty strike for cylindrical locks with 12/24 VDC field-selectable voltage. Securitron MUNL is another Grade 1 fire-rated mortise unlatch strike.
8) I need an electric strike for an aluminum storefront jamb, not a wood frame - what should I use instead of the 732?
The Folger Adam 732 is built for wood frame openings with a 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch throw latchbolt and an offset solenoid, and the companion 712 covers hollow metal frames. For aluminum jambs, the Adams Rite 7100 Series and 7160 are electric strikes made for aluminum jambs with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate. Note that both Adams Rite aluminum-jamb models are non fire-rated, so they do not suit a labeled opening.
9) I want latchbolt monitoring like the 732 LBMLCM option - what other strikes offer monitoring?
The Folger Adam 732 can be ordered with LBMLCM, a latchbolt and locking cam monitor, or without it as the plain complete strike pac. Comparable monitored options include the Dortronics 3300 Series, which has a latch bolt sensing switch, runs 12/24VDC and uses an ANSI prep strike plate of 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch; the Camden CX-ED1799L-8, a fire rated dual monitor Grade 1 strike supplied with eight faceplates; and the Hager 2945 fire rated rim exit strike with a latchbolt monitor.
10) My lock has a 5/8 inch latchbolt and the frame is hollow metal - is the 732 right, or is there a better fit?
The Folger Adam 732 is intended for wood frames, while the 712 covers 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch throw latchbolts in hollow metal frames. Alternatives sized for a 5/8 inch latch include the Adams Rite 7240 fire-rated strike for cylindrical locksets with 5/8 inch latchbolt projection, the SDC 45F fire-rated strike for 5/8 inch latchbolts with a radius corner faceplate, the Hager 2925 with a 5/8 inch latch, and the Trine 4300CC at 16-24VAC/DC fail secure with a 5-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch faceplate for throws up to 5/8 inch.
11) Is the 732 electric strike handed, and does it need shimming for a misaligned door?
Non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. The keeper is horizontally adjustable, which lets you take up door and frame misalignment during install without shimming the whole strike body.
12) Will the 732 strike hold under door preload?
No. The 732 is not preload capable, so if the opening puts pressure on the latch from a closer, weatherstripping or stack pressure, the strike may not release cleanly. On preloaded doors the usual fix is adjusting the closer and stop, or selecting a strike specifically rated for preload.
13) I need a fail safe electric strike that stays fire rated. Is there an alternative to the Folger Adam 732?
The 732 in fail safe gives up the UL 10C rating, which is fire rated fail secure only. If you need field selectable fail safe or fail secure, the Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with field reversible operation and 12/24VDC dual voltage, and the Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable operation plus latchbolt monitor. Confirm with the manufacturer which mode the fire listing covers before you specify it on a rated opening.
14) Is there a simpler, lighter-duty electric strike than the Folger Adam 732 for a low-traffic interior door?
The Folger Adam 732 is an industrial grade all stainless steel strike rated 1,500 lbs static and 70 ft-lbs dynamic, which is more than many interior openings need. Lighter options include the SDC 15 Series value strike for 5/8 inch latchbolts at 12/24 VDC, the SDC 25 Series value strike for 1/2 inch latchbolts, the Trine 001 Series light commercial fail-secure strike with a 5-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch faceplate, and the RCI 15BS economy fail-secure strike. The Trine 001 and RCI 15BS are not fire rated, so keep the 732 or another rated model on labeled doors.
15) If I am standardizing a facility on heavy duty electric strikes, what else compares with the Folger Adam 732?
The Folger Adam 732 is an industrial grade Grade 1 stainless steel strike for commercial use at 1,500 lbs static holding force. Other heavy duty choices are the Alarm Controls AES-100 Grade 1 heavy duty strike, the Locknetics MDS100 US32D and MS100 US32D heavy duty strikes, and the Von Duprin 6210 for mortise locks, a Grade 1 heavy duty UL 10C fire rated strike at 24 VDC fail-secure. The 732 is ordered in 12V or 24V and in six finishes including 630 satin stainless and 605 bright brass, which helps when matching existing openings.
16) Is there a fire-rated electric strike that needs less frame cutting than the Folger Adam 732?
The Folger Adam 732 is a full industrial strike with an offset solenoid for wood frames and a horizontally adjustable keeper for door and frame misalignment. If you want to minimize prep or cover several preps with one part, the Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a fire rated low profile universal strike supplied with four faceplates, the Camden CX-ED1410/ED1420 Series are universal Grade 1 ANSI fire rated strikes, and the Locknetics NC450 US32D is a no-cut electric strike.
17) What accessories can I add to a Folger Adam 700 Series electric strike?
HES lists the 150 strike latch guard, 152 universal mounting tabs, the 2001-1 wire-in bridge rectifier and 2001M plug-in rectifier for AC power sources, the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter, the 2005M3 SMART Pac III, and the 2006M plug-in buzzer. The strike itself uses a plug-in connector, which is what makes the plug-in accessories drop straight on.
18) I'm standardizing electric strikes across a building with brass and bronze hardware. Does the Folger Adam 732 come in a matching finish?
Six finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless steel, and 630 satin stainless steel. The body is stainless steel underneath regardless of finish, so corrosion resistance does not change with the finish you pick.
