1) Will the HES Folger Adam 310-2 electric strike work with my mortise lock, or is it only for cylindrical locks?
Both. The 310-2 accepts a mortise or cylindrical lock, as long as it's a latchbolt-only lock with no deadbolt. The 310-2 takes a 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch throw latchbolt and ships with a 1/2 inch keeper. If the lock throws a 3/4 inch latchbolt, that's the 310-2-3/4 with a 3/4 inch keeper instead, and a lock with both a 3/4 inch latchbolt and a 1 inch deadbolt needs the 310-3-1.
2) Do I have to order the HES 310-2 handed, and can I use it on a pair of doors?
No handing to specify. The 310-2 is non-handed, and it's built for single doors and pairs of doors carrying a latchbolt-only lock. On a pair without a door coordinator, the version to use is the 310-2-3/4OB. Note that the LCBMA latchbolt and locking cam monitor option is available on everything except the 310-2-3/4OB.
3) Can the HES 310-2 be used on a 3-hour fire rated door opening?
Yes, fail secure only. The 310 Series carries UL 10C 3-hour fire ratings for both single and double doors, and that rating applies to the fail secure configuration. It also conforms to CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152. If your opening is fire rated, order it fail secure; a fail safe strike unlocks on power loss, which a fire door cannot do.
4) What do I need to specify when ordering an HES Folger Adam 310-2 Complete Pac?
Four choices. Voltage, 12V or 24V. Fail safe or fail secure. Finish, from 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless steel, or 630 satin stainless steel. And whether you want the LCBMA latchbolt and locking cam monitor with auxiliary switch, or no monitoring option. Current draw is .51 amps at 12VDC and .25 amps at 24VDC, both continuous duty, so size the power supply off whichever voltage you pick.
5) Is the HES 310-2 strong enough for a high abuse door like a detention, school or transit opening?
That's what the 310 Series is built for. Static holding force is 1,500 lbs, dynamic strength is 70 ft-lbs, and the body is stainless steel throughout for strength and corrosion resistance. It's ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 and UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed. Endurance is rated to 1,000,000 cycles, so it holds up on a door that gets cycled hard all day.
6) My frame and door are slightly out of alignment. Will the 310-2 electric strike still latch?
There's adjustment built in. The keeper on the 310-2 is horizontally adjustable to take up door and frame misalignment, so you have some travel to work with during install without re-prepping the frame. What it will not do is release under pressure: the 310 Series is not preload capable, so if the door is pushing hard against the strike (wind, a stack pressure differential, a closer holding it in), the keeper can bind. Fix the alignment or the pressure at the source rather than relying on the strike to overcome it.
7) Should I order the HES 310-2 fail safe or fail secure?
Fail secure keeps the door locked when power drops and is the standard build on the 310 Series. Fail safe unlocks on power loss, which is what you want on an egress path tied to a fire alarm release. Two things decide it for you: a 3-hour fire rated opening has to be fail secure, since that's the only configuration the UL 10C rating covers, and access control on a stairwell or a door that must free up on alarm points to fail safe. It's field selectable, and both are stocked as ordering options.
8) Can I put an HES Folger Adam 310 electric strike on an exterior gate or an unprotected outdoor door?
No. The 310-2 is not outdoor rated and it isn't windstorm rated, so keep it to interior openings or an exterior door under cover where the strike itself is not exposed to weather. The stainless steel construction gives it corrosion resistance, but that is not the same as a weather rating. For a gate or a fully exposed opening, use a strike rated for outdoor use.
9) What else do I need to order with an HES 310-2 to finish the installation?
The strike itself uses a plug-in connector, so the wiring termination is straightforward.
