1) Will the HES 310-3-1 electric strike work with a lock that has both a latchbolt and a deadbolt?
That is exactly what the 310-3-1 is built for. It takes a lockset with a 3/4 inch throw latchbolt and a 1 inch throw deadbolt, and it ships with the 1 inch keeper as standard. The deadbolt has to be retracted manually, so the strike releases the latchbolt on an electrical signal but will not pull a thrown deadbolt. If your lock has a latchbolt only, you want a different member of the 310 family instead.
2) Which 310 Series strike do I order if my lock has no deadbolt?
Go by latchbolt throw. A 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch throw latchbolt without a deadbolt takes the 310-2, which comes with a 1/2 inch keeper. A 3/4 inch throw latchbolt without a deadbolt takes the 310-2-3/4. For a pair of doors with no door coordinator and a 3/4 inch throw latchbolt, the 310-2-3/4OB is the one. The 310-3-1 is only correct when the lockset has both a 3/4 inch latchbolt and a 1 inch deadbolt.
3) Is the 310-3-1 electric strike fire rated for a labeled opening?
Fire rated, but only in the fail secure configuration. The 310 Series carries UL 10C 3-hour fire rating for both single and double doors, fail secure only, plus CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformance. If you order the fail safe version, do not put it in a fire rated opening. It is also UL 1034 burglary resistant listed, UL 294 listed, and ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1.
4) Should I order the HES 310-3-1 fail safe or fail secure?
Fail secure is the standard build and the only one that holds the UL 10C fire rating, so that is the choice on any labeled door and on most exterior or secured openings: power drops, the door stays locked, and the key or inside lever still gets you out. Fail safe unlocks on power loss and is used where egress or free access has to happen when the system goes down. Both are offered as an ordering option, so pick it when you place the order rather than expecting to swap it later.
5) What voltage and current draw should I size the power supply for on a 310 Series strike?
It runs on 12 or 24 VDC, and you choose the voltage when ordering. Continuous duty draw is .51 amps at 12VDC or .25 amps at 24VDC. On a multi-door job, 24V cuts the current per opening by half, which matters when several strikes share one supply or the wire run is long. If you are feeding it from AC, HES offers the 2001-1 wire-in bridge rectifier or the 2001M plug-in rectifier.
6) Can I use the 310-3-1 electric strike on a door that binds or has preload on the latch?
No. The 310 Series is not preload capable, so if the door is pushing against the keeper from a closer, wind, or stack pressure, the strike may not release. Fix the alignment or specify a preload rated strike instead. What the 310 does give you is a horizontally adjustable keeper to compensate for door and frame misalignment, which is a different problem from latch pressure.
7) Is the HES Folger Adam 310-3-1 handed?
There is no left hand and right hand part number to choose between. The block inside the cavity is repositioned in the field for right hand or left hand applications, so one strike covers both. The keeper is also horizontally adjustable, which lets you take up door and frame misalignment during setup.
8) Can I get door position or latch monitoring from the 310-3-1 electric strike?
Yes, by adding the LCBMA option at time of order. That is the Latchbolt and Locking Cam Monitor with Auxiliary Switch, which reports latchbolt and cam status back to the access control panel so you know the opening actually secured. It is available on the 310-3-1 and on all 310 models except the 310-2-3/4OB. If you do not need monitoring, order the strike with no option.
9) Can I install a 310 Series electric strike on an exterior gate or an uncovered outside door?
It is not an outdoor rated device, so keep it in interior or weather protected openings. The stainless steel body gives corrosion resistance in damp or wash down interiors, but that is not the same as a rated exterior installation. There is also no windstorm rating on this one, so it does not belong in a storm shelter or hurricane rated opening.
