HES 310-2 3/4OB-24D 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the HES 310-2-3/4OB and the standard 310-2-3/4 electric strike?
Both take a 3/4 inch throw latchbolt with no deadbolt and both use a 3/4 inch keeper. The OB version is built specifically for a pair of doors that has no door coordinator. If your pair does have a coordinator, or you are doing a single door, the standard 310-2-3/4 is the one to order.
2) Will the HES 310-2-3/4OB work if my lock has a deadbolt as well as a latchbolt?
No. The 310-2-3/4OB is for a latchbolt only. For a lockset with both a 3/4 inch throw latchbolt and a 1 inch throw deadbolt, the 310-3-1 is the correct model, and that one comes with a 1 inch keeper. Note the deadbolt has to be retracted manually with the 310-3-1.
3) My latchbolt only throws 1/2 inch. Can I still use this HES 310 strike?
Not this one. The 310-2-3/4OB ships with a 3/4 inch keeper matched to a 3/4 inch throw latch. For a 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch throw latchbolt, order the 310-2, which comes with the 1/2 inch keeper as standard and covers single doors and pairs.
4) Can I use the HES 310 series on a 3-hour fire rated door pair?
Yes, in fail secure. The 310 Series is UL 10C fire rated for 3 hours on both single and double doors, but the fire rating applies to the fail secure configuration only. It is also ULC-S104 (CAN4-S104) conformant and conforms to NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152. If you order the fail safe version, you cannot use it on a fire rated opening.
5) Is the HES 310 strike Grade 1, and how much force will it hold?
ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, with 1,500 lbs static holding force and 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength. It is also UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and UL 294 listed. Body and faceplate are all stainless steel, which is why it holds up in high-abuse openings where lighter strikes get destroyed.
6) What voltage and current draw should I plan for on the HES 310 electric strike?
It runs 12 or 24 VDC and you pick the voltage when ordering. Continuous duty draw is .51 amps at 12VDC or .25 amps at 24VDC, so size the power supply and wire run accordingly. The strike uses a plug-in connector, and a 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier or the 2005M3 SMART Pac III is available if you are feeding it from an AC source.
7) Do I need to order fail safe or fail secure, and can it be changed in the field?
Both are offered as an ordering choice, and the mode is field selectable on the 310 Series. Fail secure is standard, meaning the door stays locked when power drops, which is what a fire rated opening and most egress-controlled doors require. Fail safe unlocks on power loss, typically used where the opening has to release during an alarm, and it voids the fire rating.
8) Can I get latchbolt monitoring on the HES 310-2-3/4OB?
No. The LCBMA latchbolt and locking cam monitor with auxiliary switch is offered across the 310 Series with one exception, and the 310-2-3/4OB is that exception. If you need monitoring output, you will need one of the other 310 configurations instead.
9) Will the HES 310 release if the door is under pressure from a closer or stack pressure?
No, it is not preload capable. On an opening where the closer or building pressure pushes the latch against the keeper, the strike may not release. Get the door and frame alignment right and relieve the preload, or specify a preload-rated strike for that opening instead.
10) Does this HES electric strike work with a mortise lock or a cylindrical lock?
Either. The 310 Series accepts mortise or cylindrical locksets, as long as the lock has a latchbolt and no deadbolt in the strike cavity. The keeper is horizontally adjustable, so you can take up door and frame misalignment during install.
11) Does the HES 310 need to be handed left or right?
It is non-handed, so one part number covers both hands. That is a real advantage for a property manager or MRO buyer standardizing spares across a building, since you stock one strike instead of two. The 310-3-1 model with the deadbolt cavity is the one where the internal block has to be positioned for RH or LH.
12) Can the HES 310 electric strike be used outside or on an exterior gate?
It is not outdoor rated and it is not windstorm rated, so keep it in protected interior openings. The stainless steel construction gives it corrosion resistance for damp or abusive interior environments, but weather exposure is outside what this strike is listed for.
13) Is the HES 310 heavy duty enough for a high traffic school or detention style opening?
This is the industrial grade end of the line. Endurance is rated at 1,000,000 cycles, construction is all stainless steel and tamper resistant, and it carries 1,500 lbs static and 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength. It is a commercial-only product, intended for abusive openings that take out standard strikes.
14) What accessories should I add when ordering an HES 310 strike for a pair of doors?
Worth pricing with it: the 310-2-3 strike latch guard (astragal) for pairs, 152 universal mounting tabs if the frame prep needs them, a 2001-1 wire-in or 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier for AC input, the 2005M3 SMART Pac III, a 2004M ElectroLynx adapter for harness connection, and the 2006M plug-in buzzer where an audible release is wanted.
15) Where can I confirm the HES 310 strike works with my specific lockset before I order?
HES publishes a compatibility chart covering lock make and model against strike model, plus an electric strike overview and the installation instructions, all available as PDFs alongside the product. For the 310-2-3/4OB the governing requirement is simple: a latchbolt-only lock with a 3/4 inch throw, on a pair of doors with no coordinator.
16) What finishes does the HES 310 series electric strike come in?
Six: 630 satin stainless, 629 bright stainless, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, and 613 bronze toned (oil rubbed bronze). Each is available in both 12V and 24V and in fail safe or fail secure, so you can match existing frame hardware without giving up the electrical configuration you need.
