The 700 series is a 3 hour fire-rated, industrial grade electric strike designed for extreme heavy duty applications. The all stainless steel construction of this device makes it ideal for high abuse applications. HES 712 24D 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES Folger Adam 712 electric strike work with my 3/4 inch latchbolt?
No. The 712 is built for 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch throw latchbolts in hollow metal frames, with a 1/2 inch PK keeper standard. For a 3/4 inch latchbolt you need the 712-75, which takes 1/2, 5/8 or 3/4 inch throws and ships with a 3/4 inch PK keeper. Ordering the wrong keeper depth is the most common miss on the 700 Series, so measure the throw on the lock you already have before you commit.
2) Can I use a Folger Adam 712 electric strike in a wood frame?
The 712 is a hollow metal frame strike. For a wood frame in the same 700 Series you want the 732 (1/2 to 5/8 inch latchbolts) or the 732-75 (up to 3/4 inch), both of which use an offset solenoid to clear the wood jamb. Same electrical and same stainless body, different frame prep.
3) Do I have to order a left hand or right hand version of the 712 strike?
No handing to specify. The 712 is non-handed, so one part covers a left or right hand opening. The keeper is horizontally adjustable as well, which lets you take up door and frame misalignment at install instead of re-prepping the jamb.
4) Is the Folger Adam 712 electric strike fire rated for a 3 hour opening?
Yes, in the fail secure configuration. The 700 Series carries UL 10C 3 hour fire ratings for both single and double doors, fail secure only, plus CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformance. It is also UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed, UL 294 listed, ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, and New York City accepted. If you order the fail safe option, the fire rating does not carry with it.
5) Should I order the 712 electric strike fail safe or fail secure?
Fail secure is the standard build and the only one that carries the 3 hour UL 10C fire rating, so on a rated opening or a stairwell door that is the order. Fail secure means the door stays locked when power drops and free egress is always available from the inside. Choose fail safe only where the door has to release on a power loss and the opening is not fire rated. Both are orderable on the 712.
6) What voltage and current draw should I size my power supply for on a Folger Adam 712?
The 712 runs 12 or 24 VDC, ordered as one or the other. Draw is .29 amps at 12VDC continuous duty and .15 amps at 24VDC continuous duty. Multiply by the number of strikes on the circuit when you size the supply. Connection is a plug-in connector, so you are not landing bare leads at the strike.
7) Will an HES 712 strike work with a Sargent 8200 or Best 40 Series mortise lock?
With the 3/4 inch keeper models, yes. The 712-75, 732-75 and 742-75 (LBMLCM) are compatible with Sargent 78/8200 Series or Best 40 Series mortise locks carrying a 3/4 inch latchbolt. Two install notes: these require relocating the center line when used with mortise locks, and with a 3/4 inch keeper the latchbolt monitoring depends on the door gap staying under 1/8 inch. HES asks that Best 40 Series applications be run past their support first.
8) What is the LBMLCM option on the 712 strike and do I need it?
LBMLCM is the Latchbolt and Locking Cam Monitor build. It reports back that the latchbolt is actually in the keeper and that the cam has locked, which is what you want when the access control head end has to prove the door is secure rather than just de-energized. Order it as the LBMLCM strike option; the plain build is the Complete Electric Strike Pac with no monitoring. One caveat: with a 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch keeper, latchbolt detection can depend on the door gap.
9) Can I use a 712 electric strike on an exterior door with a door closer that pushes on the latch?
Two limits to check. The 712 is not preload capable, so if your closer, weatherstripping or stack pressure puts side load on the latchbolt, the keeper may not release. Size the closer and adjust the door so the latch sits free in the keeper. It is also not rated for outdoor use and carries no windstorm rating, so keep it on interior openings or fully protected exterior frames.
10) What else do I need to order to finish an HES 712 electric strike install?
The strike ships as a complete pac, but the 700 Series accessory list covers what most jobs add: the 2001-1 wire-in or 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier if you are feeding it from an AC transformer, the 2005M3 SMART Pac III, the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter for pre-wired frame connections, the 2006M plug-in buzzer for audible release, the 150 strike latch guard, and the 152 universal mounting tabs. The strike itself is DC, so plan for a 12 or 24 VDC supply or a rectifier ahead of it.
11) What finishes does the HES Folger Adam 712 come in to match the rest of my hardware?
Six finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless steel, and 630 satin stainless steel. On a commercial hollow metal opening 630 satin stainless is the usual match to lever and exit hardware; 613 is the one to pick when the building is on oil rubbed bronze. Because the finishes are BHMA numbered, you can spec the strike to the same number already on your door schedule and it will read the same across the fleet.
