Note: Double-door models are available with 4 different center-to center dimensions between latchbolt keepers. Keepers are wide enough to compensate for vertical-rod exit bolts which may be as much as 3/8" off center-to-center dimension, either way.

When using an electric strike in conjunction with a vertical-rod device, it is necessary that:

  1. The bottom rod of the exit device be removed or made inoperative
  2. The latchbolt of the exit device be the "Pullman" or beveled type
  3. The latchbolt be free-latching and remain projected while the door is open. Mechanisms that hold the latchbolt retracted while the door is open, and automatically release it when the door is closed, must be removed or made inoperative

1) How do I pick between the 310-4-1, 310-4-2, 310-4-3 and 310-4-30 for a pair of doors?
Choose by the center-to-center spacing of the vertical rod on your pair. The 310-4-30 covers 2-5/8 to 3-3/8 inches, the 310-4-1 covers 4 to 4-3/4 inches, the 310-4-2 covers 4-5/8 to 5-3/8 inches, and the 310-4-3 covers 5-1/4 to 6 inches. All four ship with the PK keeper standard, and the keepers are wide enough to take a vertical-rod exit bolt up to 3/8 inch off the center-to-center dimension either way. The plain 310-4 is the single-door model for Pullman latchbolts up to 3/4 inch. Measure the rod spacing on the doors before you order.
2) My exit device has a 1/2 inch latchbolt throw, not 3/4 inch. Does the HES 310-4 still fit?
Both throws are covered by one part. The 310-4 has a 3/4 inch face plate with a 1/4 inch base shim built into it; leave the shim in for a 3/4 inch throw latchbolt, pull it out in the field and you are at 1/2 inch. No second SKU, no ordering decision, it is a screwdriver job at the opening. The shim is also horizontally adjustable, and there are set screws for horizontal lockdown once you have it where you want it.
3) Can I use an electric strike with a vertical rod exit device on a pair of doors?
Yes, with one mandatory modification: the bottom rod of the exit device must be removed or made inoperative. That is why less-bottom-rod (LBR) devices are the usual pairing. The latchbolt also has to be the Pullman beveled type and free-latching. Once the bottom rod is out of play, the double-door 310-4 models catch both leaves at the head, and you order by the rod center-to-center spacing.
4) Is the HES 310-4 electric strike fire rated for a labeled door?
Fire rated to UL 10C for 3 hours, but only in the fail secure configuration. It is also conformant to CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 for fire doors, listed to UL 1034 for burglary resistance and to UL 294, and it is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. If your opening is a labeled fire door, you order it fail secure, the fail safe option is not the fire rated configuration.
5) Should I order the 310-4 fail safe or fail secure, and what happens when the power drops?
Fail secure is the standard build: lose power and the keeper stays locked, so the opening stays secure and people still get out from the inside through the exit device. Fail safe unlocks the keeper on power loss, which is what you want on a door that has to release for egress or evacuation from the outside side. Both are orderable and the mode is field selectable, but the 3-hour fire rating only applies to fail secure, so on a labeled door the decision is made for you.
6) What voltage and current does the HES Folger Adam 310-4 draw, and can I run it off my existing 24V power supply?
The 310-4 runs 12 or 24 VDC and it is continuous duty: 510 mA at 12 VDC, 250 mA at 24 VDC. Size your supply against those numbers and remember the voltage is an ordering choice, 12V and 24V are separate variants rather than a field jumper. It connects with a plug-in connector. If you are switching it off a relay or a DC source that needs conditioning, the 2001-1 wire-in bridge rectifier, 2001M plug-in rectifier and 2005M3 SMART Pac III are the matched accessories.
7) The exit device has a starwheel interlocking latchbolt, not a Pullman latch. Which electric strike works?
The Adams Rite 7800 is the electric strike built for rim exit devices with starwheel or interlocking latchbolts. The HES Folger Adam 310-4 is specified for Pullman or beveled type latchbolts up to 3/4 inch throw, and it requires the latchbolt to be free-latching and remain projected while the door is open; mechanisms that hold the latch retracted while the door is open have to be removed or made inoperative. That makes the two non-interchangeable at the latch. Note that the 7800 is not fire rated, so it does not carry to a labeled opening the way the fire rated 310-4 does.
8) What should I use instead of the HES 310-4 when the frame cannot be cut for a mortised electric strike?
The Von Duprin 6300 is a surface mounted Grade 1 electric strike for rim exit devices, fire rated and tested to 2,000,000 cycles. The 310-4 mounts in the frame, with in-frame horizontal adjustability, set screws for horizontal lockdown, and a 3/4 inch faceplate carrying an integrated 1/4 inch shim that is removed in the field for a 1/2 inch throw latchbolt. On a hollow metal or aluminum frame that cannot take that cutout, or on a retrofit where cutting the frame is not permitted, the surface mounted 6300 is the alternate approach to the same rim exit opening.
9) Can I put an Adams Rite 74R1 or 74R2 electric strike on a fire rated opening in place of the HES 310-4?
No. The Adams Rite 74R1 and 74R2 Ultraline electric strikes for rim exit devices are not fire rated, so they do not serve a fire rated opening. The HES Folger Adam 310-4 is fire rated and carries UL 10C 3-hour fire rating in fail secure only, along with CAN4-S104, NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformance and ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. The 74R1 and 74R2 do share the field-selectable fail-safe/fail-secure operation that the 310-4 offers, so on a non-rated opening they cover the same electrical behavior; on a labeled door assembly they do not substitute.
10) Do I have to specify handing when I order the HES 310-4 electric strike?
No handing to specify. The 310-4 is non-handed, so the same part goes into a left hand or right hand opening, and a property manager stocking spares only has to carry one strike for both swings. Horizontal adjustability in the frame gives you room to fine tune the alignment on install.
11) Can I get a signal back to my access control panel telling me the door actually latched?
Order the LCBMA option. That is the Latchbolt and Locking Cam Monitor with Auxiliary Switch, and it reports both latchbolt position and the locking cam, plus an auxiliary switch contact, so your panel sees whether the strike relocked rather than just whether you sent it a pulse. It is an option, not standard, so it has to be specified at order time; the alternative choice is no monitoring. 12) Will the HES 310-4 hold up if the door is under pressure from a closer or a gasketed seal?
It is not preload capable, so if your opening pushes the latchbolt hard against the keeper (a strong closer, compressed gasketing, stack pressure, or a misaligned frame), the strike may not release on command. Fix the alignment and the closer pressure at the opening first. Where preload cannot be eliminated, you need a strike specified as preload capable rather than this one.
13) For a standard non-rated interior rim exit opening, is there a simpler strike than the HES 310-4?

If the finish has to match brass or bronze door hardware already in place, the 310-4 covers it within one part number and one set of Pullman latch requirements.
15) Do the Adams Rite 74R1 and 74R2 give me the same latch monitoring as the HES 310-4?

17) Can I install the HES 310-4 on an exterior gate or a door exposed to weather?
No. The 310-4 is not outdoor rated, so it belongs on interior openings and exterior door frames that are protected from direct weather. Its stainless steel construction handles corrosion and abuse indoors, but do not spec it for an open exterior gate or an unprotected opening. It is also not windstorm rated, which rules it out where a hurricane or tornado shelter assembly is required.
18) Can any of these rim exit electric strikes be used on an exterior door?
