1) Will the HES 310-4S electric strike work with a Corbin Russwin ED5200S or Yale 7150 rim exit device?
Yes. The 310-4S is the Squarebolt version of the Folger Adam 310 Series, built for Squarebolt style rim exit devices including the Corbin Russwin ED4200S, ED5200S and ED5200SA Securebolt, and the Yale 7150(F), 7250 and 7270M(F) Squarebolt devices. It ships with the SK keeper as standard, which is the keeper that suits those square latchbolts. If your device has a Pullman style latchbolt instead, you want the 310-4 with the PK keeper, not the -4S.
2) Can I use an HES 310-4S on a 3-hour fire rated door opening?
Yes, but only in the fail secure configuration. The 310 Series strike is UL 10C 3-hour fire rated for fail secure only, and it is also CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformant. Order the fail-safe version and the fire rating no longer applies, so on a rated opening specify fail secure.
3) My exit device has a 1/2 inch latchbolt throw. Does the 310-4S faceplate need shimming?
No shimming needed, and no filing either. The 310 Series faceplate is 3/4 inch thick with a 1/4 inch base shim built into it. Leave the shim in for a 3/4 inch throw latchbolt; pull it out in the field and the faceplate drops to 1/2 inch for a 1/2 inch throw device. That is a field operation, not a different part number. The shim is also horizontally adjustable, and set screws lock the strike down once you have the alignment right.
4) Is the HES 310-4S fail-safe or fail-secure, and what happens when the power drops?
Both are available and the mode is set by which one you order. Fail secure is the standard build: cut power and the strike stays locked, so the door still latches and you enter with a key or credential. Egress is unaffected either way, since the exit device always releases from the inside. Fail safe unlocks on power loss, which is what some life safety and stair re-entry schemes call for, but it gives up the fire rating on the 310 Series.
5) What voltage does the HES Folger Adam 310-4S strike draw, and can I run it off my existing 24VDC access control power supply?
The 310-4S runs on 12 or 24 VDC, continuous duty, drawing 510 mA at 12 VDC or 250 mA at 24 VDC. Voltage is an ordering choice, not a field jumper, so pick the 24V version for a 24 VDC supply and budget a quarter amp per strike. It uses a plug-in connector at the strike. On AC power you would add the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier; for surge and inrush management the 2005M3 SMART Pac III plugs in the same way.
6) Is the HES 310-4S tough enough for a high abuse door like a school or public housing entry?
That is what the 310 Series was built for. It is an industrial grade strike made entirely of stainless steel, rated 1,500 lbs static holding force, 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, and endurance tested to 1,000,000 cycles. ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, and UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed on top of that. Stainless throughout also means it resists corrosion, though it is not rated for outdoor exposure or windstorm openings.
7) How do I get door position and latch status back to my access control panel from an HES 310-4S?
Order the LCBMA option. It adds a latchbolt and locking cam monitor with an auxiliary switch, so the panel sees both that the latch is actually in the keeper and that the cam has relocked, not just that the relay fired. Without it the strike ships unmonitored, so if your head end is set up for door status reporting, specify LCBMA at order time. It is not something you add later. The strike is also UL 294 listed for access control system use.
8) What else could I use instead of the HES 310-4S for a rim exit device, and how do they differ?
Depends on what your latch is and whether the opening is fire rated. The Von Duprin 6111 is the closest peer we carry: Grade 1, heavy duty, 12/24 VDC, fire rated, field-selectable fail-safe or fail-secure. The Von Duprin 6300 is Grade 1 and fire rated as well but mounts to the surface of the frame rather than into it, which is the route on a frame you cannot cut. On the Adams Rite side, the 74R1 and 74R2 Ultraline strikes for rim devices are field selectable fail-safe/fail-secure and the 7800 handles starwheel and interlocking latchbolts, but none of those three is fire rated, so they are out on a rated opening. The one thing to keep straight: the 310-4S is specifically keyed to Squarebolt and Securebolt square latchbolts.
9) My exit device latch is under pressure from the closer or a stack effect. Will the HES 310-4S still release?
Not reliably. The 310 Series is not preload capable, so it should not be counted on to release with side load on the latch. On doors where wind, stack pressure or an aggressive closer is pushing the latch into the keeper, that is the constraint that decides the product. The 310-4S also is not windstorm rated, so it does not belong on a rated storm shelter opening.
10) The frame cannot be cut for a mortised electric strike. What can be used instead of the 310-4S?
The Von Duprin 6300 is a surface mounted electric strike for rim exit devices, Grade 1, fire rated and 2,000,000 cycle tested, so it mounts to the face of the frame rather than requiring a mortised cutout. On an aluminum or filled frame that cannot be cut, the 6300 is the surface answer; where the frame can be prepped and the exit device uses a Squarebolt or SecureBolt latch, the 310-4S matches the latch geometry.
11) Do I need to specify handing when ordering an HES 310-4S electric strike?
No. The 310 Series is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. That matters if you are standardizing a building: you stock one strike instead of two, and a field swap never turns into a wrong-hand return.
12) Can an HES 310-4S be installed on a frame with no cutout, or on a pair of doors?
For a frame you do not want to cut, add the SMB surface mounting box and the strike mounts to the face of the frame instead. If you are cutting the frame, the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit gives you the prep. Note the application limit though: the 310 Series is for single doors. A pair of doors with an active and inactive leaf is not what this strike addresses, and there is no mullion accessory in the 310 line.
