1) What size cabinet do I need for the Houzer MS-1708 bar sink?
Plan on a 21 inch minimum cabinet. The MS-1708 measures 16-1/4 x 17-15/16 x 8 inches overall, so the 21 inch base leaves room for the rim and the undermount clips on either side. On a narrower island cabinet it won't seat.
2) Will a standard 3-1/2 inch kitchen drain and disposal flange fit this Houzer prep sink?
Yes. The MS-1708 has a 3-1/2 inch drain opening in the center of the bowl, which is the standard US kitchen sink opening, so standard 3-1/2 inch strainers and disposal mounting flanges fit. The sink ships with a Houzer basket strainer (190-9180) already.
3) What is the difference between Houzer MS-1708-1 and MS-1708-C?
Same 17 inch satin stainless undermount bowl either way. MS-1708-1 comes with the basket strainer only; MS-1708-C adds the BG-3100 bottom grid, which keeps pots off the bowl floor and protects the finish on a prep sink that gets heavy use. If you're outfitting rental or hospitality kitchens and want the grid on every bowl, order the -C.
4) Can this undermount bar sink be installed in a quartz or granite countertop without buying extra hardware?
Mounting clips and a cutting template ship in the box, so you have what you need to set the bowl under a stone or solid surface top. You still supply the silicone and, for stone, the fabricator-installed anchors or epoxy per the countertop shop's method. Houzer also publishes undermount installation instructions and an MS-1708 spec sheet for the cutout.
5) Is 18 gauge stainless heavy enough for a commercial bar or breakroom prep sink?
The MS-1708 is 18 gauge T-304 stainless, which is the usual spec for a quality residential and light commercial bowl. T-304 is the chrome-nickel grade that resists water, food acids and cleaning chemicals, and 18 gauge is heavier than the 20 and 22 gauge bowls commonly sold at this size. It is IAPMO certified. For a true foodservice fixture you would be looking at NSF-listed equipment instead.
6) How deep is the bowl on the Houzer MS-1708, and will it hold a stock pot?
Bowl depth is a full 8 inches, with an interior of 14-1/16 x 15-3/4 inches. That's deep for a bar and prep bowl, so a medium stock pot, a sheet pan edgewise, or a tall pitcher under the faucet all work. Rounded interior corners make it easier to wipe out.
7) Does the faucet mount in this sink or in the countertop?
There is no faucet deck on the MS-1708. It's an undermount single bowl, so the faucet and any air gap or soap dispenser get drilled in the countertop behind the bowl. That's what lets you pick any single-hole or widespread bar faucet you like rather than matching a pre-drilled hole pattern.
8) Does this sink sweat or rattle under a stone top?
Houzer puts StoneGuard undercoating over a Super Silencer pad on the MS-1708. The pad knocks down the clatter of glassware and flatware hitting the bowl, and the undercoating is there to stop condensation forming on the underside of the bowl, which matters if the cabinet below holds a chilled line or stored goods.
