1) What drain opening does the Houzer MS-2309 take, and is a strainer included?
Standard 3-1/2 inch kitchen drain opening, which is what disposals and standard basket strainers are built for. A basket strainer (190-9180) comes with the sink. If you order the MS-2309-C version you also get the BG-2500 bottom grid; the MS-2309-1 is the strainer-only configuration.
2) What is the difference between the MS-2309-1 and the MS-2309-C?
Same sink, different kit. MS-2309-1 ships with the basket strainer only. MS-2309-C adds the stainless bottom grid, which keeps pots off the bowl floor and cuts down on scratching and water spotting. Both are satin stainless steel. For rental or multi-family work where tenants will be dropping cast iron in the bowl, the -C is the one worth spending on.
3) Can I undermount this Houzer sink to a laminate or butcher block counter?
Undermount installation is intended for stone or solid surface tops where the exposed edge of the cutout can be finished and sealed. Laminate is not a reliable substrate for an undermount because the particleboard core will swell at the cut edge. Butcher block can work if the cut edge is thoroughly sealed, but that is a fabricator call. The MS-2309 ships with mounting clips, a template and installation instructions, so the cutout can be laid out accurately either way.
4) How much usable bowl space does the 23 inch MS-2309 actually give me?
The interior bowl is 21 x 15-3/4 inches with 9 inches of depth, a square shape with a moderate radius in the corners. That takes a full-size baking sheet flat and swallows a stock pot without splashing over the rim. The overall 23-3/16 inch length is the outside of the rim, not the washing area, which is why the cutout and the cabinet have to be sized off the overall number and not the bowl.
5) Does the faucet mount to the Houzer MS-2309 or to the countertop?
To the countertop. Undermount sinks have no deck, so the faucet, sprayer, air gap and soap dispenser all get bored through the counter behind the sink. That means you pick your hole count and spread when the top is fabricated, not when you buy the sink, and any single-hole or widespread faucet will work.
6) What accessories can I add to the MS-2309 later?
Two optional pieces fit this bowl: the CB-2500 cutting board and the RB-2500 rinsing basket, both sized to sit on the bowl rim so you can prep and rinse over the sink. The BG-2500 bottom grid is also available and is already included if you take the MS-2309-C.
7) Will the satin finish on this sink match the other stainless sinks in my building?
The Medallion Classic MS-2309 is a lustrous satin (brushed) stainless with a highlighted rim, the standard finish for stainless kitchen sinks, so it reads consistently against other brushed stainless bowls and appliances. Both orderable configurations are the same satin stainless, so a mixed order of strainer-only and strainer-plus-grid units still matches across units.
8) Do I need to buy mounting clips or a template separately?
No. Mounting hardware and the cutout template both ship with the MS-2309, along with the installation instructions. What is not included is the silicone or epoxy the fabricator uses to bed the rim, and the tailpiece or disposal flange connecting the 3-1/2 inch drain to your trap.
