Sta-Kon REV727 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use this Sta-Kon ring terminal on 480V control and power circuits?
Yes. The REV727 carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120, 240, and 480 V branch and control work. It is UL listed under file E9809.
2) Is the REV727 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I put it on an aluminum conductor?
It is a copper terminal, so use it on copper conductors only. Aluminum conductors need a lug rated AL or AL9CU with the proper inhibitor compound; a copper-only barrel on aluminum wire sets up a dissimilar-metal connection that loosens and heats.
3) Do I need a special crimper for a 6 AWG insulated ring terminal?
Yes. A 6 AWG barrel is well past the range of the common red/blue/yellow hand crimper used on 22-10 AWG insulated terminals. You need a heavy-duty ratcheting or hydraulic crimper with a die sized for 6 AWG copper. The vinyl insulation also means no soldering heat and no uninsulated-die crimp that would cut the sleeve.
4) Should I use a ring terminal or a spade terminal on a 6 AWG battery or bus connection?
Use the ring. A ring tongue, like the REV727's 5/16 ring, is captive under the nut and cannot vibrate off the stud, which is why it is the one specified for battery posts, bus bars, and grounding studs. A spade or fork tongue is only for places you need to pull the wire off without fully removing the screw, and it is not appropriate for high-vibration or high-current terminations.
5) Is the blue insulation on the REV727 a color code for the wire size?
The REV727 is blue, but on 6 AWG terminals the color is the manufacturer's series marking rather than the familiar small-gauge code (red 22-16, blue 16-14, yellow 12-10). Go by the printed 6 AWG rating, not the color, when you are picking lugs out of a bin.
6) Does the vinyl insulation on this ring terminal mean I don't have to tape the connection?
The insulated sleeve covers the barrel and the crimped wire entry, so a correctly crimped joint needs no additional tape or heat shrink over the barrel. The ring tongue itself is bare metal by design, since that is the conductive surface under the nut, so keep it clear of adjacent live parts or grounded surfaces in a tight enclosure.
7) Is the Sta-Kon REV727 made in the USA for a government or Buy American job?
Country of origin on the REV727 is listed as both United States and Mexico, so production runs come from either plant. If your specification requires documented domestic origin, verify the marking on the actual carton you receive rather than assuming the batch.
