International Door Closers 201A-INTL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the International Door Closers 201 concealed closer fit in my 1-3/4 inch by 4 inch aluminum header?
Yes. The 201 overhead concealed closer is sized to fit an aluminum header or transom bar as small as 1-3/4 x 4 inches, which is the common storefront header section. Anything larger than that will also take it. Because the body goes up inside the header, the door itself has to be center pivoted rather than butt hung.
2) Does the 5 lb. spring tension version of the IDC 201 work on an exterior entrance door?
No. The 5 lb. opening force setting is the interior spec. For an exterior door the 200 Series calls for the 8-1/2 lb. opening force version, because wind load and stack pressure on an entrance will overwhelm a 5 lb. spring and leave the door standing open or failing to latch. Use the 5 lb. unit on interior center pivoted doors, vestibule inner doors, and lobby doors.
3) What is the difference between the side loading and end loading top arm on the IDC 201 concealed closer?
It comes down to how much depth your top rail has. The adjustable side loading top arm assembly is for a 1/2 inch depth top rail, and the end loading top arm assembly is for a 1 inch depth top rail. Measure the top rail on the door before you order, because the arm is not interchangeable after the fact. The side loading version is the adjustable one, which helps when the pivot alignment needs to be dialed in on site.
4) Does the 201 hold the door open at 105 degrees, or does it always close?
This one always closes. The 201 configuration is a 105 degree back stop with no hold-open, so the built-in stop catches the door at 105 degrees to protect the glass and adjacent walls, but the door returns to closed on its own. If you need the leaf to stand open, the 200 Series also offers 105 degree back stop with hold-open, and 90 degree back stop versions with and without hold-open. For a fire rated opening or anywhere the door has to self close, no hold-open is the correct choice.
5) Can the IDC 201 concealed closer be used on a double acting door that swings both ways?
Yes, on center hung doors the 201 works double acting or single acting. It ships double acting; applying a door stop to the frame is what makes it single acting. That is a decision made at install, not a different part number.
6) Can the closing and latching speed be adjusted after the closer is installed in the header?
Yes. Closing speed and latching speed run through two separate regulating valves on the 201, and both are fully adjustable after installation. That matters on a concealed unit, since you are not pulling the body back out of the header to tune the door. It is the usual fix when a door slams into the frame or stalls short of latching in cold weather.
7) Do I need to order pivots and a top arm separately with the International Door Closers 201?
The top arm is the choice you make on the order: pick either the adjustable side loading arm for a 1/2 inch depth top rail or the end loading arm for a 1 inch depth top rail. The 200 Series also lists S type adjustable side loading arms and A, K and PT type end loading arms for center pivoted applications, so match the arm type to the door and the pivot set already in the opening.
8) Is the 201 a standard LIGHT/MEDIUM/HEAVY spring closer or a fixed tension unit?
The 201 as configured is the ADA 5 lb. interior spring tension. The 200 Series separately offers standard spring tensions in light, medium and heavy for openings where accessible opening force is not the governing requirement. If you are standardizing a building on a low opening force for accessibility, the 5 lb. interior unit is the one to repeat across the interior doors.
