International Door Closers 211A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the International Door Closers 211 concealed closer fit inside my aluminum header?
The 211 fits a header or transom bar as small as 1-3/4 by 4 inches, which is why it works in most standard storefront and aluminum entrance headers. Measure the actual channel cavity in your header before ordering; anything smaller than 1-3/4 x 4 will not take the closer body.
2) What size doors does the 211 overhead concealed closer handle?
Doors 36 to 48 inches wide by 96 inches tall. The 8-1/2 lb ADA spring tension is set for exterior center pivoted doors in that range, so a wider or taller leaf is outside what this unit is rated to swing.
3) Does the 211 closer hold the door open, or does it always close?
It always closes. The 211 is the no hold-open version with a 105 degree back stop, so the door stops hard at 105 degrees and then returns to closed on its own. If you need the leaf to stay parked open, order the hold-open version of the same closer instead (105 degree back stop with hold-open, or the 90 degree back stop with hold-open).
4) I need to keep opening force under the ADA limit on an exterior entrance. Is this closer ADA compliant?
Yes. The 211 is supplied with the 8-1/2 lb ADA spring tension intended for exterior doors on center pivoted applications. The interior ADA setting is 5 lb opening force, so if this is an interior leaf you want that version rather than this one. Standard light, medium and heavy tensions are also offered in the family when ADA force is not the requirement.
5) Which top arm do I order for the 211, side loading or end loading?
It comes down to your top rail depth. The adjustable side loading top arm assembly is for a 1/2 inch depth top rail, and the end loading top arm assembly is for a 1 inch depth top rail. Measure the rail on the door leaf first, because the arm is the part that has to land in it. Side loading also gives you adjustment at the arm, which helps when the door and header are not perfectly aligned.
6) Can the 211 concealed closer be used on a double acting door?
Yes, on center hung doors the 211 will run double acting or single acting. Applying a door stop to the frame is what makes it single acting. Note this is a center hung closer, so the door must be pivoted on center, not butt hung on hinges or offset pivoted.
7) Do I still need a separate overhead door stop with this closer?
Usually not. The 211 has a built-in positive back stop at 105 degrees, so the closer itself takes the overswing load and stops the leaf. That matters where a surface stop would be exposed to abuse or where there is no wall to land a stop on. If your opening needs the door to stop earlier, the 90 degree back stop version is the one to specify.
8) Can the closing speed be adjusted after the closer is installed in the header?
Yes, and that is the point of the two valve design. Closing speed and latching speed are on separate regulating valves, both fully adjustable after installation, so you can slow the sweep for an ADA opening and still bring the leaf home firmly into the latch without pulling the closer back out of the header.
9) Will an overhead concealed closer keep a storefront door from being pushed open by wind?
The 211 uses positive centering, which aligns the door and holds it closed against normal wind or draft. On an exterior entrance that is the difference between a leaf that sits shut and one that stands off the jamb. The hydraulic fluid is a stable check fluid rated for any climate, so the closing speed does not swing wildly between a cold morning and a hot afternoon.
10) What is the difference between an overhead concealed closer and a surface mounted closer for a glass entrance?
An overhead concealed closer like the 211 sits inside the header or transom bar, so nothing shows on the door face or the frame. That is why it gets used on aluminum and glass front entrances where a surface closer body and arm would be visible. The trade-off: the concealed unit needs a header with room for it (1-3/4 by 4 inches minimum here) and it is a center hung application, while a surface closer mounts to almost any door and frame and can be serviced without opening the header.
