Each unit is supplied fully equipped with a top arm assembly—options include adjustable "S" side loading (standard), or optional "A", "K", and "PT" end loading configurations. 1) What is the difference between the IDC 230, 231, 232 and 233 concealed door closers?
The four models differ only in backstop angle and whether hold-open is built in. The 230 gives a 105 degree backstop with hold-open, the 231 is 105 degree backstop without hold-open, the 232 is 90 degree backstop with hold-open, and the 233 is 90 degree backstop without hold-open. Pick the 90 degree models when the door has to stop square, for instance where a return wall or adjacent glass is just past the open position.
2) Will the IDC 232 concealed closer fit in my existing aluminum storefront header?
It installs in headers or transom bars as small as 1-3/4 inches by 4 inches, which is the common narrow storefront header size. Measure the inside cavity of your header, not the outside face, before committing.
3) Does the IDC 232 overhead concealed closer come with a bottom pivot, or do I order that separately?
A complete assembly ships in the box: the 3010-DP adjustable dual-purpose bottom pivot set, which mounts to floor or threshold in side or end loading, the 3010-FS anchor set with all fasteners, and the adjustable "S" side-loading top arm as standard. The 3010-G and 3010-GE bottom pivot sets are alternatives and have to be ordered separately.
4) What do I need to specify when ordering an IDC 232 concealed closer?
Three things beyond the model. First, hold-open or no hold-open, and whether you want the two-valve or three-valve version. Second, the arm: the "S" adjustable side-loading arm comes standard, and "A", "K" or "PT" end-loading arms, or "JO" and "VO" offset arms, must be called out. Third, spring tension. Unless you say otherwise, you get the "S" arm, the 3010-DP pivot set and the 3010-FS anchor set.
5) What is the difference between the two-valve and three-valve versions of this concealed closer?
The two-valve build gives independent closing speed and latching speed adjustment through two regulating valves, both reachable after the closer is installed in the header. The three-valve build adds a further regulating valve for a third point of control. Both are offered with or without hold-open, so you choose the valve count and the hold-open independently.
6) Can this closer be used on an offset pivot door, or only center hung?
Both, but the arm decides it. Center-pivoted doors use the standard "S" side-loading arm or the "A", "K" and "PT" end-loading arms. For offset hung doors, order the "JO" or "VO" offset arm, which is an option and is not supplied unless specified. Note that the ADA 5 lb and 8.5 lb spring tensions are stated for center-pivoted doors.
7) Do I still need a separate overhead stop if I use this closer?
No, on the 232 the backstop is built into the closer and stops the door at 90 degrees, and it also holds the door open at that point. The 233 is the same 90 degree backstop without the hold-open. That is the reason to buy this series over a closer that needs a separate stop arm cluttering the head.
8) Will this concealed closer hold its closing speed through a cold winter on an exterior entrance?
It runs on hydraulic door check fluid that is formulated to perform across varying climates and continuously lubricates the closer internals. A positive centering mechanism also pulls the door square in the frame and keeps it shut against wind and drafts, which is the usual complaint on exposed storefront entrances. For exterior use with ADA force, the 8.5 lb tension is the exterior option.
9) Can I adjust the closing and latching speed after the header is installed and glazed?
Yes. The regulating valves are positioned to be reached after installation, so closing speed and latching speed can be set independently without pulling the closer back out of the header. That matters on storefront work where the header is already capped and the glass is in.
