1) Which lock does the Keedex K-BXCL4000 gate box fit?
The K-BXCL4000 is prepped for a Codelock 4000 series mechanical gate lock, and it needs the LBFR70 latch to work with it. If you are mounting a different lock body, this is the wrong box, since the cutouts are cut for that lock and the 2-3/4 inch backset that goes with it.
2) Does the LBFR70 latch come with the Keedex gate box?
No. The gate box is sold as the weldable steel housing only. You order the Codelock 4000 lock and the LBFR70 latch separately, and the box is built to take that combination.
3) What size opening do I need to weld a Keedex K-BXCL4000 gate box into?
The box measures 5-1/2 inches wide by 7-1/2 inches high by 1-3/4 inches deep, so your gate frame or stile has to accept a pocket at least that size. The 1-3/4 inch depth is the number that usually decides it: on a square tube gate frame, the tube has to be deep enough to swallow the box or you will need to build out a mounting plate.
4) Is the Keedex gate box heavy enough for a commercial gate or exterior application?
It is built from 14 gauge steel and rated commercial, which is the weld-in construction used on exterior pedestrian gates and fence gates where the lock has no door stile to mount into. It ships bare steel, so plan on paint or powder coat after welding if the gate lives outdoors.
5) What backset does the K-BXCL4000 gate box give me?
2-3/4 inches, which is the standard commercial backset. That fixes where the lock centerline sits relative to the gate edge, so your strike or receiver on the post has to be set to match once the box is welded in.
6) Why do I need a gate box at all instead of mounting the Codelock straight to the gate?
A tubular gate frame has no flat, thick stile to bore, so the lock has nothing to grip and no protected pocket for the latch. The K-BXCL4000 gives you that: a 14 gauge steel enclosure you weld into the frame, already prepped at a 2-3/4 inch backset for the Codelock 4000 and its LBFR70 latch. Without it, you are fabricating the pocket yourself.
7) Can I standardize on one Keedex gate box across a property with mixed gate locks?
Only where the gates run Codelock 4000 hardware. Keedex builds gate boxes model by model, each cut for a specific lock, and the K-BXCL4000 is the Codelock 4000 version using the LBFR70 latch. For gates on other lock brands you will need the matching Keedex box for that lock, not this one.
