Kraloy 78553 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can this PVC elbow be direct buried or encased in concrete?
Yes. The Kraloy Schedule 40 45 degree elbow is approved for exposed, concrete encased and direct burial use, which covers duct banks under slabs, parking garages, street and highway lighting runs, and bridge or tunnel work.
2) Do I need glue for this elbow or does it thread on?
It is solvent weld only. Both ends are plain sockets (SPxSP) meant to be cemented with PVC conduit solvent cement to Schedule 40 conduit of the same trade size. There is no threaded end, so if your run terminates in a threaded box hub you will need a male terminal adapter.
3) Should I use a 45 degree elbow or a 90 for my conduit run?
Use the 45 when you need a shallow offset or to ease around an obstruction without burning bend allowance. Two 45s make a gentler offset than a pair of 90s and keep pulling tension lower on long runs. Pick a 90 only where you genuinely need to turn the corner square, such as a stub-up out of a slab. The Kraloy 45 degree standard elbow is the sweep-style fitting for the former case.
4) Will this PVC elbow hold up in a car wash or water treatment plant?
That is exactly where it is used. Kraloy lists the Schedule 40 PVC elbow for car washes, water and sewage treatment plants, food processing and fish plants, marinas, pulp and paper mills, steel mills, mines, and agricultural buildings, which are all corrosive or wet environments where metallic raceway suffers. The body is impact resistant rigid PVC.
5) Can I use this on a residential service or underground feeder?
Yes, residential is one of the listed applications, along with utilities, communications, and cable work. For a buried feeder the elbow carries the direct burial approval, so it can go in the trench with the rest of the Schedule 40 run.
