Larsens Gemini Series 24096R-10LB Capacity -Non Fire Rated - Stainless Steel Surface Mounted Frameless Acrylic Door Cabinets

These Gemini Series Cabinets feature a nominal inside box dimension of 24 inches (60.9 cm) height, 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) width and 6 inches (15.2 cm) depth.
GEMINI SERIES GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Larsen’s Gemini Series is an aesthetically designed cabinet line which is identified by an extensive selection of frameless acrylic doors. Gemini cabinets are identical to the Architectural Series, except these units have a frameless door of smooth or textured acrylic in lieu of the conventional hollow-metal door frame. The dimensions of the Gemini Series cabinets are outlined in the table at right. Please refer to page 7 for the appropriate wall installation and trim projection information. The Gemini Series is specified by using the prefix “G” as part of the model number.
DOOR SPECIFICATION: The standard door material is smooth or textured acrylic. If lettering is specified, the design is placed on the back of the door to prevent damage. A selection of the more popular Gemini door styles is pictured below. The complete range of options, however, is outlined in the chart below. The Larsen-Loc® is available with all door styles. All doors have a satin finish pull handle with a self-adjusting roller catch and a continuous piano hinge constructed of material which matches the trim.
  • Inside box depth is 43 ⁄4" when supplied with aluminum door and trim. The AL G2409-5R and AL G2409-R7 have 11 ⁄4" square trims.
  • Trimless cabinets must be installed before drywall because their plaster stops must be behind the drywall. Trimless are not recommended for block wall installation.
  • Deduct 3 ⁄4" from H x W dimensions for cabinets with aluminum trim. This does not apply to “FS” fire-rated option.
  • To comply with ADA wall projection guidelines, this cabinet must be mounted with its leading edge at or below 27" from the finished floor.
  • To comply with ADA wall projection guidelines, this cabinet must be specified with Larsen’s recessed handle

ALL OF THESE DOOR STYLES ARE AVAILABLE WITH EXCLUSIVE LARSEN-LOC® OPTION. The Larsen-Loc® provides access to a locked cabinet, without requiring the breaking of glass. During an emergency, it permits the cabinet door to be opened simply by pulling sharply on the handle. Factory applied decal reads: “IN CASE OF FIRE ONLY – PULL FIRMLY ON HANDLE”. By specifying the Larsen-Loc®, access to a locked cabinet is totally independent of the desired door style and glazing. All door styles can be combined with the Larsen-Loc®, including a solid metal door. The standard Larsen-Loc® on a Solid Door would be appropriate for gymnasiums or any locations where emergency access is required but where any kind of glazing or glazing opening may not be suitable. The Solid Door with Larsen-Loc® also can be specified as an Institutional Door (emergency access only with a key) by deleting the pull handle and decal

Die-cut letters are state-of-the-art for precise and attractive cabinet identification and have replaced silk screen letters as the industry standard. They are available in standard colors of red, black, or white and the standard designs of vertical, horizontal, or type A. A selection of the more popular styles is pictured below. Custom lettering, special colors, and pictorial graphics also are available, if specified.

VIGILANTE ALARM

Larsen’s exclusive Vigilante Alarm provides additional protection for a cabinet’s life safety contents. The Vigilante can reduce theft losses, help to prolong extinguisher life, and safeguard fire department valves, fire hose, and other equipment. It is constructed of high impact plastic, is plunger activated and includes a heavy-duty 9 volt battery as standard equipment. The on/off jack provides for convenient servicing of the cabinet’s contents by authorized personnel.

Larsens SSG2409SMW – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Larsens 24096R Gemini cabinet hold a 10 lb fire extinguisher?
Yes. The Gemini 24096R is sized for a 10 lb extinguisher, with a nominal inside box of 24 inches high, 9.5 inches wide and 6 inches deep. Measure your extinguisher's overall height with the handle and its widest point at the base before you commit; a 10 lb ABC dry chemical unit is what this box is cut for.
2) Is the Larsens 24096R fire rated? I have a 1-hour rated corridor wall.
No. The 24096R Gemini cabinet is a non-fire-rated unit. If your extinguisher cabinet is going into a rated wall assembly and the cabinet is recessed into it, the penetration has to be handled with a fire-rated cabinet instead. A surface mounted install on a rated wall does not cut the wall open, which is the usual way around this. Larsens builds a rated version under the "FS" option, so specify that if the drawing calls for a rated cabinet.
3) What do I have to do to keep a Larsens Gemini surface mounted cabinet ADA compliant?
Two things, and both are order decisions, not field decisions. Mount the cabinet with its leading edge at or below 27 inches from the finished floor, and specify Larsens' recessed handle. A surface mounted cabinet projects into the corridor, which is why the 27 inch leading edge matters; below that height a cane detects it. Order the handle style as Recessed and you have covered the second half.
4) Can I install a trimless Larsens fire extinguisher cabinet in an existing block wall or finished drywall?
No, and this is the one that sends cabinets back. Trimless cabinets have to go in before the drywall, because their plaster stops sit behind the drywall. They are also not recommended for block wall installation. On an existing finished wall or a CMU wall, order a trimmed cabinet instead.
5) How do I lock a fire extinguisher cabinet and still let people get to the extinguisher in a fire?
That's what the Larsen-Loc is for. It lets a locked cabinet be opened by pulling sharply on the handle, no glass to break, and it comes with a factory decal reading "IN CASE OF FIRE ONLY - PULL FIRMLY ON HANDLE". It works with every door style, including a solid metal door, so the lock choice is independent of the glazing you pick. Order the lock as Included when you configure the cabinet.
6) What is the wall depth option on the Larsens 24096R and which one do I pick?
Two choices: a 6-1/2 inch wall depth, or Surface Mounted. Pick 6-1/2 inch when the box is going into the wall cavity and you have the depth behind the finished face to take a 6 inch deep box. Pick Surface Mounted when the wall cannot be opened up, which covers most block walls, rated assemblies, and any retrofit into finished construction. If you go surface mounted, remember the 27 inch leading edge rule for ADA.
7) What is the difference between the Larsens Gemini series and the Architectural series cabinet?
The box is the same. Gemini cabinets are identical to the Architectural Series except for the door: Gemini uses a frameless acrylic door rather than a conventional hollow-metal door frame. Pick Gemini when the architect wants the clean frameless look in the corridor, and Architectural when you want a metal door frame around the glazing. Gemini models carry a "G" prefix in the model number.
8) I need a lockable extinguisher cabinet for a school gym with no glass in it. What do I specify?
A solid door with the Larsen-Loc is the answer for gymnasiums or anywhere emergency access is required but glazing or a glazing opening is not suitable. If you want it locked down harder, the same solid door with Larsen-Loc can be specified as an Institutional Door, which is emergency access by key only, by deleting the pull handle and the decal.
9) How do I stop people stealing extinguishers out of the cabinets in my building?
Add the Vigilante Alarm to the cabinet. It is plunger activated, built of high impact plastic, and ships with a heavy-duty 9 volt battery. There is an on/off jack so your service tech can pull the extinguisher for annual inspection without setting it off. Larsens offers it in a standard and a surface mounted version, so match it to how the cabinet is going in.
10) What color acrylic doors does the Larsens Gemini 24096R come in?
Four door colors: clear, red, white and black. Clear is the usual pick when you want the extinguisher visible for inspection at a glance; red reads as fire equipment from down the corridor even without lettering. All four are available with either handle style and with or without the lock.
11) Do I need to add lettering to a fire extinguisher cabinet, and what are the options?
Larsens does the identification with die-cut letters, which replaced silk screen as the industry standard, in red, black or white. Standard layouts are vertical, horizontal, or Type A, and there's an International Extinguisher Symbol in red or black. Custom lettering, special colors and pictorial graphics can be had if you specify them. On the acrylic doors the design goes on the back of the door so it cannot be scratched off.
12) What is the door and trim made of on the Larsens 24096R stainless cabinet?
Stainless steel is the door material on the 24096R. The doors themselves are frameless smooth or textured acrylic in the Gemini line, with a satin finish pull handle, a self-adjusting roller catch, and a continuous piano hinge made of material matching the trim. Stainless is what you want in kitchens, healthcare corridors, and anywhere the cabinet gets wiped down constantly.
