1) Will a 10 lb fire extinguisher fit in the Larsens Occult O2409 cabinet?
Sized for it. The O2409 box is 24 inches high, 9.5 inches wide and 6 inches deep on the inside, and Larsen's rates that cavity for a 10 lb extinguisher. Check your unit at its widest point before you commit, which is usually the valve body, the hose and horn, or the bracket band rather than the cylinder itself, against the 9.5 inch width and 6 inch depth. If you are standardizing a building on one cabinet, the 24 inch interior height also gives you room for the bracket without the discharge hose fouling the door.
2) Can the Larsens O2409 Occult cabinet be surface mounted, or does it have to be recessed into the wall?
It is a recessed cabinet, and the whole design depends on that: the door covers the flange completely when closed, which is what gives the trimless look. The box interior alone is 6 inches deep, so a standard 2x4 stud wall at 3-1/2 inches of cavity will not take it. You need a 2x6 wall, a furred out wall, a shaft wall or a chase deep enough to swallow the box. If the wall you have is 2x4 and cannot be furred, an Occult cabinet is the wrong choice for that opening and you want a semi-recessed or surface mounted cabinet instead.
3) Is there a way to lock a fire extinguisher cabinet without a break-glass panel?
The Larsen-Loc mechanism on the O2409 does exactly that. It keeps the cabinet locked against tampering and theft, but emergency access does not require breaking glass to get the extinguisher out. For a school corridor, a lobby, a dorm or any public-facing space where extinguishers walk, that removes the recurring cost and the mess of replacing a broken panel every time someone opens a cabinet. The lock is an order-time choice, Included or Not Included, so specify it up front.
4) What is the difference between the steel, aluminum and stainless steel Larsens O2409 cabinets?
Steel is the standard door, cold-rolled with a white baked acrylic enamel that works as the finish or as a prime coat if you are painting to match the wall. Aluminum doors are anodized, clear anodized standard with color anodizing available, and aluminum is a non-fire-rated construction only. Stainless is 304 with a #4 brushed finish, polished optional, and it is the one to specify for wash-down areas, commercial kitchens, natatoriums and coastal or high-humidity exposure. Behind the door, the box itself is cold-rolled steel in all cases.
5) Can I paint a Larsens O2409 cabinet door to match my wall color?
On the steel version, yes. The steel door comes with a white baked acrylic enamel that Larsen's states is suitable as a finish coat or as a prime coat, so it takes field paint. The aluminum door is anodized rather than painted, clear anodized as standard with color anodizing available from the factory, and the stainless door is 304 with a #4 brushed finish, so neither of those is meant to be painted over. The box behind the door is matte black as standard, with white available if you call it out on the order.
6) What handle options are available on the Larsens O2409, and when would I use the recessed one?
Three ways to order it: a projecting pull (Not Recessed), a Recessed pull, or No Handle at all. The standard hardware is a satin finish pull with a self-adjusting roller catch, and a die-cast FIRE handle can be substituted. Take the recessed pull where you have specified an Occult cabinet for the flush look and do not want a pull breaking the plane of the door, or in a tight corridor where a projecting handle is a snag point for carts and gurneys. The recessed handle is offered on select configurations, so pair it with your door style and material when you order.
7) How far does the door on the Larsens O2409 cabinet open?
A full 180 degrees, on a concealed aluminum hinge with a stainless steel pin. The door lays back flat against the wall so nothing blocks the pull when someone grabs the extinguisher under pressure. The trade-off is swing clearance: you need the hinge side free of a return wall, a door frame or a column within the width of the door, so think about which way the cabinet is handed when you pick the location in the wall. The hinge being concealed also means there is no exposed hardware on the face to spoil the trimless look.
