Larsens Architectural Series AL2409 - 10LB Capacity -Non Fire Rated - Aluminum Door

These Architectural Series Fire Extinguisher Cabinets feature a nominal inside box dimension of 24 inches (60.9 cm) height, 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) width and 6 inches (15.2 cm) depth.

BOX SPECIFICATION: All recessed and semi-recessed cabinets and surface-mounted steel cabinets have a heavy gauge, white baked enamel box. Surface-mounted cabinets with aluminum door and trim have a box constructed entirely of clear or color anodized aluminum. Surface-mounted cabinets with stainless steel door and trim have a box constructed entirely of 304 stainless steel with #4 finish.

TRIM AND DOOR SPECIFICATION: Steel trims and doors are one piece, constructed of cold-rolled steel with a standard finish of white baked acrylic enamel, which can be used as either a finish or prime coat. Aluminum trims are constructed of extruded or fabricated aluminum and all corners are mitered. Aluminum is the recommended material for applications in salt air and other corrosion prone environments. Clear satin anodized finish is standard for all trims and doors, and optional color anodized finishes are available. To specify aluminum trim and door, use the prefix “AL” before the cabinet model number. Stainless steel trims and doors are one piece, constructed of #4 finish, 304 stainless steel. To specify stainless steel trim and door, use the prefix “SS” before the cabinet model number. All steel and stainless steel doors have a tubular, hollow-metal design. Samples of door and trim materials are pictured.

ALL OF THESE DOOR STYLES ARE AVAILABLE WITH EXCLUSIVE LARSEN-LOC® OPTION. The Larsen-Loc® provides access to a locked cabinet, without requiring the breaking of glass. During an emergency, it permits the cabinet door to be opened simply by pulling sharply on the handle. Factory applied decal reads: “IN CASE OF FIRE ONLY – PULL FIRMLY ON HANDLE”. By specifying the Larsen-Loc®, access to a locked cabinet is totally independent of the desired door style and glazing. All door styles can be combined with the Larsen-Loc®, including a solid metal door. The standard Larsen-Loc® on a Solid Door would be appropriate for gymnasiums or any locations where emergency access is required but where any kind of glazing or glazing opening may not be suitable. The Solid Door with Larsen-Loc® also can be specified as an Institutional Door (emergency access only with a key) by deleting the pull handle and decal

  • Inside box depth is 43 ⁄4" when supplied with aluminum door and trim. The AL2409-5R and AL2409-R7 have 11 ⁄4" square trims.
  • Trimless cabinets must be installed before drywall because their plaster stops must be behind the drywall. Trimless are not recommended for block wall installation.
  • Deduct 3 ⁄4" from H x W dimensions for cabinets with aluminum door and trim. This does not apply to “FS” fire-rated option.
  • To comply with ADA wall projection guidelines, this cabinet must be mounted with its leading edge at or below 27" from the finished floor

Die-cut letters are state-of-the-art for precise and attractive cabinet identification and have replaced silk screen letters as the industry standard. They are available in standard colors of red, black, or white and the standard designs of vertical, horizontal, or type A. A selection of the more popular styles is pictured below. Custom lettering, special colors, and pictorial graphics also are available, if specified.

VIGILANTE ALARM

Larsen’s exclusive Vigilante Alarm provides additional protection for a cabinet’s life safety contents. The Vigilante can reduce theft losses, help to prolong extinguisher life, and safeguard fire department valves, fire hose, and other equipment. It is constructed of high impact plastic, is plunger activated and includes a heavy-duty 9 volt battery as standard equipment. The on/off jack provides for convenient servicing of the cabinet’s contents by authorized personnel.

Larsens AL24096RVD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Larsens AL2409 fire rated? I need a cabinet for a 1-hour rated corridor wall.
No. The AL2409 is a non-fire-rated cabinet, so it is not the right choice where the cabinet is being recessed into a rated wall assembly and the assembly rating has to be maintained. Larsens designates the fire-rated option with the FS suffix; for a rated wall you need that version rather than this one.
2) How high can I mount a Larsens AL2409 cabinet and still meet ADA?
Mount it with the leading edge at or below 27 inches from the finished floor. Above that height a projecting cabinet becomes a protruding-object problem under the ADA wall projection guidelines, so the 27 inch leading edge is the number the inspector is checking. The AL2409 is built to comply when mounted that way.
3) How do I get into a locked Larsens extinguisher cabinet in an emergency without breaking glass?
That is what the Larsen-Loc option does. Pull sharply on the handle and the locked door opens, no glass to break, and it comes with a factory applied decal reading IN CASE OF FIRE ONLY, PULL FIRMLY ON HANDLE. It works with any door style including a solid metal door, which is the usual pick for gymnasiums and anywhere glazing is a liability. Delete the pull handle and decal and the same solid door becomes an institutional door, key access only.
4) Can I use a Larsens AL2409 on a concrete block wall?
Yes, if you order it with trim. What you cannot use on block is a trimless cabinet, because its plaster stops have to sit behind the drywall, which means it must go in before the drywall is hung. Trimless is not recommended for block wall installation. On block, pick a trimmed recessed cabinet or the surface mounted version.
5) Why choose an aluminum door Larsens cabinet over the steel or stainless version?
Aluminum is the material Larsens recommends for salt air and other corrosion prone environments, so coastal buildings, pool enclosures, and wash-down areas are where the AL2409 earns its keep over the painted steel version. Clear satin anodized is the standard finish, with color anodized available. If you want stainless instead, that is the SS prefix, in #4 finish 304 stainless. Surface-mounted cabinets with an aluminum door and trim get a box built entirely of anodized aluminum, not a painted steel box.
6) Which door style should I pick for a Larsens AL2409 in a school hallway?
Four door styles are offered: full glass, horizontal duo, vertical duo, and solid. In a school corridor or gym where a glazed panel is going to get hit, the solid door removes the breakage problem entirely, and pairing it with the Larsen-Loc keeps emergency access without any glazing. If you want the extinguisher visible so people can find it, the full glass or a duo door does that. Glazing itself is a separate choice: standard acrylic, tempered glass, or laminated safety glass.
7) Does a Larsens AL2409 cabinet come with a lock, and can I get one that locks?
Lock is a choice you make when ordering the AL2409, included or not included. If you lock it, plan how the fire department and your inspector get in: the Larsen-Loc option lets anyone open a locked door by pulling hard on the handle, while the institutional door version restricts it to key access only. Locking without one of those puts a barrier between an occupant and the extinguisher.
8) Can I get a Larsens extinguisher cabinet with an alarm to stop extinguishers walking off?
The Vigilante Alarm is the option for that. It is plunger activated, built of high impact plastic, and ships with a heavy-duty 9 volt battery. There is an on/off jack so your service tech can open the cabinet for annual inspection without setting it off. It is offered in a standard version and a surface mounted version. Useful in schools, dorms, transit facilities, and anywhere extinguishers disappear or get discharged for fun.
9) I am standardizing extinguisher cabinets across a whole building. What do I have to specify on each Larsens AL2409 order?
Six decisions per cabinet: door style (full glass, horizontal duo, vertical duo, or solid), handle recessed or not, lock included or not, wall depth to match each wall condition, glazing (acrylic, tempered, or laminated safety glass), and any lettering, sign, fire handle, or Vigilante Alarm. Wall depth is the one that varies opening to opening in a single building, so survey each location rather than ordering one depth across the job. Everything else can be held constant to keep the building consistent.
10) How do I mark a Larsens fire extinguisher cabinet so it is identifiable from down the corridor?
Two separate things do that job. Die-cut lettering goes on the cabinet door itself, in red, black, or white, in vertical, horizontal, or Type A layouts, or the international extinguisher symbol. Custom lettering, special colors, and pictorial graphics can be specified. For visibility down a long corridor you also want a projecting sign, which is a separate add-on from the door lettering. Die-cut letters have replaced silk screen as the industry standard.
11) What is the difference between a recessed and non-recessed handle on a Larsens AL2409?
A recessed handle sits within the door face so nothing sticks out into the corridor, which matters when the cabinet is mounted in a circulation path and you are watching protruding-object clearance. A non-recessed handle projects. Both are offered on the AL2409. Pair the handle choice with the 27 inch leading-edge mounting rule and you have the ADA side covered.
