Leviton 5604-2W – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need one 4-way switch or two to control a light from three locations?
One. The Leviton 5604 is a 4-way device, and it goes in the middle of the circuit between two 3-way switches. That combination gives you control from three separate points. For a fourth or fifth location, add another 4-way switch in the run between the same two 3-way switches at the ends.
2) Can I use this Leviton rocker switch on a 277V commercial lighting circuit?
Electrically, yes. The 5604 is rated 120/277V at 15A, so it handles a 277V branch circuit as well as standard 120V. Worth knowing before you spec it into a commercial job: it is built to residential grade, not spec or commercial grade. For high-cycle corridors, stairwells, or tenant spaces in a commercial building, most electrical specs call for a commercial or spec grade device instead.
3) Will a Decora rocker switch fit the same wall plate as my old toggle switch?
No. The 5604 uses a wide Decora style rocker paddle, which takes a decorator/rectangular opening wall plate. A standard toggle plate with the narrow slot will not fit over it. The device body mounts in the same single-gang box with the same strap screws, so the box and wiring stay as they are, but budget for new decorator plates on every position you convert.
4) My stairway light only has two switch locations. Is a 4-way switch what I need?
No. Two locations calls for a pair of 3-way switches. The 5604 is a 4-way and only works when it sits between two 3-way switches, adding a third or later control point. Drop a 4-way into a two-location circuit and the light will not switch correctly.
5) Can I swap this straight into an existing 4-way switch position without rewiring?
Yes, if the position is already wired as a 4-way. The 5604 is a functional drop-in for an existing 4-way location in residential wiring, so the four travelers and ground land the same way. Two things to confirm before you start: kill the circuit and verify you have a true 4-way position (four conductors plus ground, not three), and plan on a decorator wall plate since the rocker will not fit a toggle plate.
6) What colors does the Leviton 5604 4-way rocker switch come in?
Three: White (5604-2W), Light Almond (5604-2T), and Black (5604-2E). If you are matching existing devices in a home or a unit turnover, match the wall plate color too, since the Decora plate is a separate purchase.
7) Will this switch work on a ceiling fan or a receptacle circuit, or is it lighting only?
It is a general purpose AC switch, not lighting-only. Leviton lists it for controlling a lighting fixture, fan, or receptacle circuit from multiple locations. It is a plain on/off device with no dimming function, so for fan speed control or light dimming you need a dedicated fan speed control or dimmer instead.
8) Am I limited to 15 amps on the branch circuit with this switch?
The 5604 is rated 15A, so it is matched to a 15A branch circuit. Standard residential lighting circuits are 15A, so this covers most rooms, halls, and stairwells. If the circuit feeding the switch legs is protected at 20A, use a 20A rated switch instead.
9) Is the AC quiet switch mechanism actually quieter than a standard toggle?
That is the point of the design. The AC quiet mechanism cuts the audible snap you get from a conventional mechanical toggle, which is why these get specified for bedrooms, nurseries, and hallways next to sleeping areas. It is a mechanical switch, so there is still a soft action, just not the sharp click.
