1) Will a Leviton 8300-H hospital grade receptacle accept a standard 15A plug as well as a 20A plug?
Yes. The 8300-H is a NEMA 5-20R duplex, and a 5-20R face takes both the straight blade 15A (5-15P) cord cap and the T-slot 20A (5-20P) cap. So medical carts, monitors, and ordinary office equipment all plug in. What it will not do is serve a 20A plug on a 15A circuit, the branch circuit and wire need to be sized for 20A at 125V.
2) What does hospital grade mean on this Leviton duplex receptacle, and do I need it in patient care areas?
Hospital grade means the device is built and tested for high reliability with repeated plug insertion and removal, which is why it is specified in patient care spaces and other critical-use areas. The Leviton 8300-H carries that hospital grade designation. Outside patient care, in corridors, offices, or general commercial rooms, a standard commercial spec grade 20A receptacle usually satisfies the drawing, so check what the electrical spec calls for before standardizing the whole floor on hospital grade.
3) What is the difference between the ivory 8300-HI and the red 8300-HR?
Electrically they are the same device, 20A 125V NEMA 5-20R hospital grade. The difference is color coding. Red, ordered as 8300-HR, is the convention for outlets fed from the emergency or generator-backed branch, while ivory, 8300-HI, is used for normal power. If your facility color codes critical branch circuits, order red for those and ivory everywhere else.
4) Does the Leviton 8300-H hospital grade receptacle come with a wall plate?
No. The 8300-H is the receptacle device only, ivory or red. You order the cover plate separately, and it needs to be a duplex opening plate. Standard duplex wall plates and box mounting hardware fit it the same as any other duplex device.
