Metallics JMPMP36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Metallics JMPMP36 M3 screw a coarse metric thread, and what nut or tapped hole does it need?
The JMPMP36 is M3 with a 0.5 mm thread pitch, which is the standard coarse metric pitch for M3. It mates with any M3-0.5 nut or tapped hole. If your device is tapped M3 x 0.35 fine pitch, this screw will not thread in.
2) Will zinc plated steel M3 screws hold up outdoors or in a wet location?
Material is zinc plated steel, which is a dry indoor finish. It handles general electrical, plumbing, and HVAC interior work fine, but for wet, washdown, coastal, or corrosive environments you want stainless steel M3 pan head screws instead. Zinc plating will eventually bloom and rust in standing moisture.
3) Can I use the Metallics JMPMP36 on a Buy American or ARRA funded project?
No. The JMPMP36 is flagged as not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. On a federally funded job with domestic sourcing requirements you will need a domestically produced M3 pan head screw instead.
4) Is M3 x 6mm the same as a #4 or #6 imperial machine screw?
No. This is a metric screw, M3 diameter with 0.5 mm pitch, built to ISO 1580. It will not thread into an imperial tapped hole such as 4-40 or 6-32, and an imperial screw will not thread into an M3 hole. If the equipment is metric, usually imported panels, devices, and HVAC controls, M3 is what you need. Other metric sizes and quantities are available by request.
5) How much thread length do I actually get with a 6mm M3 pan head screw?
Fastener length on the JMPMP36 is 6 mm. On a pan head screw that length is measured under the head, so you get the full 6 mm of thread into the tapped hole. It is a short screw, meant for thin sheet metal, device plates, and enclosure covers rather than anything with depth to it.
6) Is a pan head the right choice, or should I use a flat head screw instead?
The JMPMP36 has a pan head, which seats on top of the surface and needs no countersink, so it is the one to use on flat sheet metal, plates, and enclosure covers. If the drawing calls for a flush surface, you need a countersunk flat head screw and a chamfered hole instead; a pan head will stand proud. Drive is Phillips.
7) What dimensional standard do these Metallics M3 pan head screws conform to?
They are built to ISO 1580, the standard for slotted/cross-recessed pan head metric machine screws. If your spec or drawing calls out ISO 1580 pan head M3, this screw meets that designation.
8) Are these M3 machine screws strong enough for structural or load bearing use?
Tensile strength is 420 N/mm2 minimum with a hardness of Rockwell B71-99.5, which is standard low carbon commercial machine screw material. That is right for securing devices, covers, brackets, and panel components. It is not a high strength or Grade 8.8 class fastener, so do not substitute it where a drawing calls out a property class for load bearing connections.
