1) Will a Milbank U4701 meter socket work on a 3-phase 4-wire service?
The U4701 is a 7-terminal (7-jaw) socket rated 600V AC, 60 Hz, for 3-phase metering at 200 continuous amps. Seven jaws is the configuration utilities call for on 3-phase 4-wire self-contained metering. If your service is single phase, this is the wrong socket, you want a 4-jaw or 5-jaw unit instead.
2) What size wire will the Milbank U4701 200A meter socket lugs take?
Both line and load side terminals accept 6 AWG through 350 kcmil, and they are lay-in style, so the conductor drops into the terminal rather than threading through a closed lug. That range covers the usual 200A commercial feeder sizes on copper or aluminum. Insulation is glass polyester.
3) Does the Milbank U4701 meter socket include a main breaker or disconnect?
No. The U4701 is a meter socket only, no main breaker and no receptacles, one meter position. Service disconnecting means has to come from a separate panel or disconnect downstream. If you need metering and the main in one enclosure, you are looking for a meter main, not this.

For an overhead drop with conduit, U4701-RL gives a small hub opening and U4701-RRL steps a large hub down to a small hub opening. For underground or bottom feed where the top must stay sealed, take a closing plate version: U4701-XL, or U4701-RXL for large hub to small closing plate. 6) Is there a Milbank U4701 version built to the PSE&G New Jersey utility spec?
Yes, U4701-XL-BLG-PSEG is the Public Service Electric and Gas New Jersey configuration, with a small closing plate and barrel lock. If you are outside PSE&G territory, U4701-XL-BLG is the same small closing plate and barrel lock build without the utility-specific designation. Order the one your serving utility accepts, they will refuse to set a meter in a socket that is not on their approved list.
7) Can a Milbank U4701 meter socket be mounted outdoors on an exterior wall?
Type 3R rated and UL Listed, so it is built for outdoor surface mounting with protection from rain and ice. The enclosure is G90 galvanized steel with a powder coat finish. It is a surface-mount unit, not flush, so it sits proud of the wall and needs a flat backing surface, siding, block, or a rack.

Yes, the U4701 is rated to 600 volts AC, which covers 480/277V and 208/120V 3-phase four-wire services at 60 Hz. What it does not cover is CT metering, this is a self-contained socket capped at 200 continuous amps. Services above that need a CT cabinet and a transformer-rated meter socket.
11) What is the difference between the Milbank U4701-RL and U4701-RL-QG?
Both are small hub open configurations for overhead entry. The -QG adds a quadplex ground provision. Pick the quadplex ground version when the utility drop is quadplex and the neutral/ground needs that termination at the socket, otherwise U4701-RL is the plain small hub open build.
