1) Will the Nibco 4551-H PVC flange bolt up to a metal ANSI 150 flange?
Yes. The 4551-H Chemtrol flange has a drilling pattern compatible with ANSI B16.5 Class 150, so it mates to cast iron, steel, or other Class 150 flanged equipment and valves of the same nominal size. Use a full-face gasket and flat washers under the bolt heads and nuts, and tighten in a cross pattern to avoid cracking the PVC hub.
2) How does the 4551-H flange connect to the pipe, socket or thread?
It is a socket (S) end, solvent weld only. The pipe slides into the female socket and is joined with PVC primer and Schedule 80 solvent cement. If your run is threaded pipe, you need the threaded (FPT) version of the flange instead, not this one.
3) What is the temperature limit on this Chemtrol PVC Schedule 80 flange?
140 degrees F maximum service temperature. Above that, PVC loses pressure capability fast, so hot water, steam, or high-temp process lines need CPVC or metal instead. Pressure rating also derates as temperature climbs toward that ceiling.
4) Can I use this PVC flange on a compressed air line?
No. Chemtrol states plainly that these fittings must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pneumatic pressure testing, hydrostatic test with water only. Stored energy in a gas line makes a PVC failure a shrapnel hazard.
5) Is the Nibco 4551-H flange approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 listings and is classified lead-free, which is what a potable water job or a plan reviewer will ask for. It also meets ASTM F1970.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4551-H socket flange come in?
Ten sizes, from 1/2 inch up to 8 inch: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch. Order by nominal pipe size and match it to your Schedule 80 PVC pipe OD.
7) What is the difference between a one-piece flange and a van stone style flange?
The 4551-H is one-piece solid: the hub and the bolt ring are a single molded part, so the bolt holes cannot be rotated once the socket is cemented to the pipe. You have to clock the bolt pattern before the cement sets. A van stone flange has a free-spinning ring that lets you line up bolt holes after the fact, which is easier on tie-ins to fixed equipment. For straightforward runs and pump or valve connections where you can rotate the pipe, the solid design is the simpler, stronger choice.
8) Do I get bolts and a gasket with the Nibco 4551-H flange?
No. What you order is the PVC flange itself. Bolts, nuts, washers and the flange gasket are separate, and you need two flanges for a mated joint unless you are bolting to an existing Class 150 flange on a pump, tank or valve. Solvent cement and primer are also separate.
