Nibco CB18800 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How does the 5151-H flange connect to the pipe - is it threaded or solvent welded?
It's a socket connection, not threaded. The hub is a female S socket that slips over Schedule 80 CPVC pipe and is joined with CPVC solvent cement. If your run is threaded, you need a threaded-hub flange instead, or a socket x thread transition adapter ahead of this one.
2) What temperature can a Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 flange handle?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F. That is the headline reason to use CPVC over standard PVC on hot process or hot water lines. Remember that pressure rating on any thermoplastic falls off as temperature climbs, so derate for your operating temperature.
3) Can I use this CPVC flange on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. The Corzan CPVC socket flange is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and is classed lead-free, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on potable service. It is also used on industrial process and irrigation lines.
4) Can I pressure test this CPVC flange with compressed air?
No. Do not use or test the flange or the CPVC system with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test only. Air testing thermoplastic piping stores energy in the line and a failure is violent.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5151-H CPVC socket flange come in?
Eleven sizes, 1/2 inch through 8 inch: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch. Order by size, for example CB18800 for 1 inch and CB19100 for 4 inch. All are Schedule 80, so the socket is sized for Sch 80 CPVC pipe OD.
6) Is the 5151-H a one-piece flange or a van stone with a loose backing ring?
One-piece solid design. The hub and the flange face are a single molding, so there is no rotating backing ring to line up bolt holes with. You have to clock the bolt holes before the cement sets, which matters when you are tying into a fixed pump or valve flange.
7) What is the difference between this CPVC flange and a standard PVC Schedule 80 flange?
Same Schedule 80 dimensions and the same ANSI B16.5 Class 150 bolt pattern, but the material is chlorinated PVC rather than PVC, which is what carries it to a 210 degree F maximum service temperature. The body is light grey rather than the dark grey typical of PVC Sch 80, so it is easy to tell apart on a jobsite. It also requires CPVC solvent cement, not PVC cement.
8) Does the Nibco 5151-H flange come with bolts and a gasket?
The flange is supplied on its own. Plan to order the gasket, bolts, nuts and washers separately, plus CPVC solvent cement and primer for the socket joint. Match the bolt count and hole size to ANSI B16.5 Class 150 for your pipe size.
9) Is this CPVC flange suitable for a buried or underground line?
Yes. Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 is used underground and the material will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, so it holds up in soils that attack metal pipe. Support and bed the flange joint properly so soil loading is not carried on the bolted connection.
10) What is the universal part number for the Nibco 5151-H flange?
It carries Universal Part No. 1851, and the Chemtrol/Nibco order numbers run by size, for example CB18700 in 1/2 inch, CB18950 in 2 inch and CB19200 in 8 inch. Distributors cross-referencing a takeoff should use those.
