Nibco CB19719 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco 5151-A CPVC flange bolt up to my cast iron ANSI 150 pump flange?
Yes. The 5151-A flange ring is drilled to match ANSI B16.5 Class 150 bolt patterns, so it mates to standard Class 150 metal flanges, valves and pump connections in the same size. Because it is a Van Stone design, the ring rotates freely on the hub, so you can line the bolt holes up after the hub is solvent welded to the pipe instead of fighting the pipe to get holes to register.
2) How does the CPVC socket flange connect to the pipe, glue or thread?
Solvent weld. The hub has a female S socket end, so the pipe slips into the socket and is joined with CPVC primer and cement. There is no thread on the pipe end, so you cannot thread pipe into it, and you need CPVC cement rated for Schedule 80 work, not PVC cement.
3) How hot can this CPVC flange run?
Maximum service temperature is 210 F, which is why CPVC gets specified over PVC on hot water and heated process lines. Keep in mind pressure rating falls as temperature climbs, so a line near the top of that range is not running at full cold-water pressure.
4) Can I use this flange on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. The 5151-A is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for drinking water system components, and it is listed as lead-free. It is used on commercial plumbing, industrial process and irrigation systems.
5) Is a gasket and bolt set included with the Nibco 5151-A flange?
No. What ships is the two-piece flange itself, a connector hub plus a webbed CPVC flange ring. Gaskets, bolts, nuts and washers are separate, as is the primer and CPVC solvent cement for the socket joint. Plan the fastener hardware around the ANSI B16.5 Class 150 pattern for your size.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5151-A Van Stone flange come in?
Eleven sizes, from 1/2 inch up through 8 inch: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch. Order by size, for example CB19715 for 1/2 inch, CB19725 for 2 inch and CB19220 for 8 inch. Match the socket to the pipe OD size, and note it is Schedule 80 pipe the socket is sized for.
7) Why choose a Van Stone flange instead of a one-piece CPVC flange?
On a one-piece flange the bolt holes are fixed relative to the socket, so the pipe has to be rotated into position before the cement sets. The 5151-A splits the part: the hub solvent welds to the pipe and the webbed ring spins independently, so bolt holes get aligned after the fact. That is the reason it gets specified for tie-ins to existing equipment and for long straight runs where you cannot twist the pipe.
8) Will this CPVC flange handle a buried irrigation main?
CPVC Schedule 80 is called out for underground performance and is listed for irrigation use along with commercial plumbing and industrial service. The fitting will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is the usual failure mode for metal flanges in wet soil. It also carries ASTM F1970 certification.
9) Will this light grey flange match my existing CPVC piping color?
The 5151-A is light grey, which is the standard color for Chemtrol CPVC Schedule 80 industrial piping. If your system is the tan or cream CTS CPVC used for potable hot and cold tubing, the color will not match and the sizing system is different as well, since this fitting is sized for Schedule 80 iron pipe size pipe.
10) Is the Nibco 5151-A the same thing as universal part 1854?
Yes, the 5151-A socket flange cross references to universal part number 1854. Order by pipe size using the Chemtrol part numbers, for instance CB19205 for the 3 inch and CB19210 for the 4 inch.
