Nibco CB20470 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 5151-W-3 CPVC flange bolt up to my existing metal 150# flange?
Yes. The 5151-W-3 flange face and bolt pattern follow ANSI B16.5 Class 150, so it mates with any standard 150-pound drilled companion flange, metal or plastic. Use a full-face gasket and tighten in a cross pattern with even torque, since you are pulling a thermoplastic flange against a rigid mating face.
2) How does the 5151-W-3 connect to the pipe, threaded or solvent weld?
It is a threaded flange, not a socket flange. The hub takes female NPT, so you thread a male NPT pipe end or threaded adapter into it. If your run is being solvent cemented, you would need a socket-style flange instead, or a male adapter cemented to the pipe and threaded into this one.
3) How hot can this Corzan CPVC flange run?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F. That is the headline reason to use CPVC over PVC here, since it holds up on hot water and warm process lines where PVC would not. Remember that pressure rating falls off as temperature climbs, so derate per the Chemtrol data for your operating temp.
4) Can I use this CPVC flange on potable water in a commercial building?
It is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is catalogued as a lead-free application part, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on potable water. System uses include commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation.
5) Can I pressure test a CPVC flanged line with compressed air?
No. Nibco states plainly not to use or test this fitting with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test only. A thermoplastic system failing under stored air energy is a safety problem, not just a leak.
6) What pipe size does the Nibco 5151-W-3 Corzan CPVC flange come in?
2 inch, ordered under Nibco part CB20470. It is Schedule 80, so it pairs with 2 inch Sch 80 CPVC pipe and threaded fittings.
7) Does the Nibco 5151-W-3 flange include bolts and a gasket?
The 5151-W-3 is the flange only. Bolts, nuts, washers and the full-face gasket are separate and need to be ordered for the joint, sized to the ANSI B16.5 Class 150 bolt pattern for 2 inch.
8) Why use a flange here instead of just threading or cementing the joint?
A flange gives you a break point you can take apart. Use one where a pump, valve, strainer or tank nozzle has to come out for service, or where you are transitioning to equipment that is already flanged to ANSI B16.5 Class 150. For a permanent buried or in-wall run, threaded or solvent cemented joints are the lighter and cheaper choice; Chemtrol CPVC systems are joined all three ways.
9) What does the one-piece webbed design on this Nibco flange actually do for me?
The web is the reinforcing rib running from the hub out to the flange face. Being molded as one piece, it carries the bolt load without a separate ring or insert, so there is no two-part flange to assemble and nothing to slip when you torque it down. It also means the whole part is Corzan CPVC, light grey, with no metal to corrode.
10) Is it also known by another part number?
Yes, it carries Universal Part No. 1852, and the Nibco order number is CB20470. Chemtrol is a Nibco brand, so you will see the same fitting referenced under the Chemtrol Corzan CPVC line.
